IS-DOS - two ways to copy files on one drive

NEWSpectrum #1
I present to you one small brochure -
ru, which I wrote quite a long time ago - in
October 1994. Of course, there is a lot in it
already outdated, but I think that for those who
it just starts working in iS-DOS
useful. Can be divided into pages
as convenient for you and print yourself not-
a big book.

         PREFACE
        ═══════════════════════

   In December 1993, in the magazine "ZX-re-
vu" I read about the new disk operation
iS-DOS system. About those opportunities
which this system provides us with
and could not have dreamed of it before. Several times
I re-read this article, but still don’t believe
It turned out that this could be done on
ZX-Spectrum. I bought my first one in January
iS-DOS version! And the whole of 1994 was in
claims and discoveries of iS-DOS. Before in
my hands got into the "User Manual"
iS-DOS" Moscow 1993, I went through the files
floppy disks and didn’t understand why all this was needed.
Although the "Manual..." is not very
sowed fog over iS-DOS. It was written by a man
century, which itself participated in the development
iS-DOS, and therefore for it a lot of things
taken for granted, but for us simple
mortal users, this is a dark forest.
   In this brochure I would like to share with
by you some of the experience that I have gained
when working with iS-DOS.

              ──── *** ────

    ┌────────────────────────────────┐
    │ COPYING ON ONE DISK DRIVE │
    └────────────────────────────────┘

   Since most users
There is usually only one disco
waters, then consider the issue of copying
iS-DOS format disks using one
drive.

             FIRST METHOD
            ───────────────

   Format the floppy disk using the program
"iS-DOS formatter" frames. Open the cata-
log SHELL and place the cursor on the file
extkey. txt. Press key 4. The
editor menu, press ENTER, and you will be
You will be in edit mode for this file.
Here you need to write the following
line:

&Q:SHELL\wait /A/B

where & (SS+6) is the key you need to press
press to initialize the program
wait. The wait program translates the system
theme to keypress standby mode
ENTER when switching, i.e. for work
with one disk drive. Instead of the & key, you can
can be any unused key
in the extkey file. txt, at your request.
Write a file: press CAPS simultaneously
SHIFT and SPACE (CS/S). A menu will appear in
bottom of the screen:

┌───────────────────── ─────────────────────┐
│DelLn UnDL Exit LF Param Top Bot Save Find│
└───────────────────── ─────────────────────┘

   BSelect the Exit option by pressing the E key
or M. In the menu that appears:

              ╔═════════╗
              ║ Dry exit║
              ║ Wet exit║
              ║ Leave ║
              ╚═════════╝

select Dry exit.  Corrected
extkey.txt file is written.

   Now let's directly deal with copying
roving:

1. Load the disc with the corrected
file extkey.txt;

2. Press the & key (SS/6);

3. Enter the directory where the program is located.
ramma abba.com;

4. Place the cursor on abba.com and click
those ENTER;

5. Insert the disc you want into the drive.
want to copy, press ENTER.

   The following message will appear at the top: INSERT DEVICE
B.

6. Insert the disc into the drive that you want to
want to copy, press ENTER.
   The following message will appear at the top: INSERT DEVICE
A.

   Change discs until the bitter end.

             SECOND METHOD
            ───────────────

   This method differs from the first in that
that the abba.com program is not required, when-
how discs turn out to be full-fledged - download
pressed.  One limitation: this method
applicable only for version 1.0 (first
version).

1.Format the floppy disk using iS-DOS
formatter and set it aside for now;

2.Load the disc with version 1.0 and log in
to the SERVICE directory (in some disks this
the directory is called SERVICE), fail
cursor to file create.com (catalog creation
log) and press ENTER. Two windows will appear:

┌──────────┐ ┌───────────────┐
│Drive: A│ │Name iSDOS'93│
│Retry: 4│ │ Double │
│Check Y│ │ Tracks: 80│
│Exist: ask│ │ Sec Size: 1024│
│Parameters│ │ boot: TR-DOS │
│Create │ │ Dev Size: 3200│
│Save │ │ Dir Size: 2│
│Exit │ │ Contiguous │
└──────────┘ │ Quit │
                        └───────────────┘

3.Insert the formatted disk into the drive
disk.

4.Place the cursor on Create in the left window
not and press ENTER. On the screen of your mo-
nitor two empty directories will appear.

    Now we need to create two ka-
directory: SHELL, SERVICE and write the file
extent. txt, i.e. root directory (which is
appears on initial boot
iS-DOS system) must have the following
view:

            ╓────────────────╖
            ║ SHELL ║
            ║ SERVICE ║
            ║ extent txt 2 ║
            ║ ║
            ║ ║
            ║ ║
            ║ ║
            ║ ║
            ║ ║
            ╙────────────────╜

5.Creation of the SHELL catalog.

  - press key 7 and in the window that appears -
do not write SHELL, press ENTER.

6.Creation of the SERVICE catalog.

  - press key 7 and in the window that appears -
do not write SERVICE (to switch to
Russian font press the keys at the same time
or CS/1), press ENTER.

7.Write it in kaSHELL files directory:

  - disk.mnu
  - menu.com

8. We write the files to the SERVICE directory:

  -boot.com
  -con.com
  - smal_dos.sys

*************************************************

   Let me remind you how to copy files from one
disk to another using one disk-
yes:

* insert the disk on which you want to download
write some files (in the future we will
dem call it - disk A) from another (ba-
call) disk (we will call it disk
B), and download it;

* open the directory on drive A to which
You want to burn files;

* insert disk B into the drive and load
it into a free panel by pressing CS/1 - le-
first panel, CS/2 - right;

* having placed the cursor on the necessary files, press
Press SPACE to mark the group
files that need to be copied;

* press key 5 after registering
The copy program will load and panels will appear
to display the dynamics of copying;

* press ENTER to load copied
files;

* insert disk B into the drive and press
ENTER

  Continue changing discs until
until all files are copied.

 9.Write the file to the root directory
extent. txt;

10.Open the SHELL directory, install
cursor to the disk.mnu file, press ENTER. B
appear in the lower right menu, select
"JOIN SYSTEM" item, press
ENTER;

11.Open the SERVICE catalog, install
cursor to the boot.com file, press ENTER.

   That's it, in this form the disk is already bootable
ny! This can be checked by pressing RESET and
by loading this disc.

   Now all that remains is to create the OS
tal directories and write down all non-
required files and subdirectories.

    ┌───────────────────────────────┐
    │ INITIAL DISK LOADING │
    │ USING FILE autoexеc.bat │
    └───────────────────────────────┘

   The autoexec.bat file performs the first
initial disk loading, i.e. downloads and
initializes your selected resident
tasks. It must be in the root
catalogue. It should be noted that the presence
autoexec.bat file is optional, in this
In this case, the system will simply boot, print out
chatting on the monitor screen two panels.
   If there is no such file on your disk,
then you can create it yourself:

1. While in the root directory, click
key 4;

2. In the menu that appears, select the option:
CREATE NEW FILE - You will see a window with a blinking
cursor;

3. In this window write: autoexec.bat and
press ENTER - your disk already contains
There is such a file, but it is empty;

4. Now you need to write the following to this file:
Mandate strings, for example:

Q:RES\set Q:eprof.lpr

5. Press simultaneously CS/SS and in the appeared
from the menu, select the Dry Exit option by pressing
to ENTER.

   That's it, the autoexec.bat file is written to the
Nevadirectory and will work every time
when you load your disc.
   Some comments on what we
written down in paragraph 4. With this
line the driver for your
printer. For example, the driver is written
eprof.lpr (for EPSON, RADII,
MS-6312 with pseudographics). Find a driver
ver for your printer in the catalog
DRIVERS and copy it to the root directory
log. Let me briefly remind you how to do this:

- load the disc;

- move the cursor to the DRIVERS directory,
press ENTER;

- place the cursor on the PROFI subdirectory,
press ENTER;

- place the cursor on the file eprof.lpr,
press key 5;

- press ENTER until the box opens
new directory, and in it you will see a file
eprof.lpr.

   After you have found your driver
ver, wrote it to the root directory and
entered the command line to download it
when initializing the disk to a file
autoexec.bat, then all other drivers,
located in the DRIVERS directory are no longer
are needed and can be erased. Thus
This will free up a lot of space on your disk.
   You can erase the DRIVERS directory in two ways:
ways:

1st method. Open each subdirectory,
mark all files using SPACE, on-
Press the 8 key and erase all files. Then
also erase each subdirectory and at the end
finally the DRIVERS directory itself. Long and tedious
ny process;

2nd method. This method is different
fast and reliable (can wash
files and directories even with corrupted descriptions
satami).  Place cursor on directory
DRIVERS and press the r key, i.e. call
remote.com program (specify for which
the key is assigned to this program in the file
extkey.txt). The following message will appear:

          ┌─────────────────┐
          │ │
          │ Remote: │
          │ DRIVERS │
          │ │
          └─────────────────┘

  Press ENTER and directory with all of it
will be erased by the giblets.

  It is advisable to then use the program
frames arzt.com free space on
disk make the information writable
mation, i.e. analogue of the MOVE command in TR-DOS.
  How to work with the arzt.com program?
Very simple. Press the z key, it will appear
program menu:

             ┌───────────┐
             │ DISKNAME │
             │ Device: A │
             │ Start │
             │ Repeat │
             │ Write BM │
             │ blk: 3200 │
             └───────────┘

Please note that in the last
In this paragraph the number 3200 was written, i.e.
The entire disk was serviced.
  Select the Start option, press ENTER,
a window will appear at the top in which there will be
flash the names of directories and files.
After going through the entire disk, the program will collect
information on deleted files, stop
viavailable and this information can be viewed
in the windows that appear:

            ┌──────────────┐
            │ │
            │FOUND: │
            │ block: 719 │
            └──────────────┘
            ┌─────────────┐
            │ Lost: 0 │
            │ Cross: 0 │
            │ Found: 1 │
            └─────────────┘

  If you want, you can view everything
found blocks by pressing ENTER, but it doesn't
necessarily.  Now press STOP (SS/S),
the cursor will move to the left menu, set
point it to the Write BM option and click
ENTER. That's it, you can exit the program:
press STOP, work panels will print
whether. You can see how much is free
disk space available: press the l key and
A message will appear at the top, for example:

 All: 3200 Free: 1365 Contiguous: 1278

  Let's go back to the autoexec.bat file. So we
We wrote one line in this file for
driver download. By writing the lines:

   In the SHELL catalog write in text
editor files:
