TEAC FD-55GFR 193-U

From Igor Zhadinets To All 28 June 2000

Hello, All!

Maybe someone has rebuilt Subj to read DD/DS disks? Tell us how to achieve
normal operation.
After moving the jumpers to the indicated position, it was possible to achieve a disk rotation speed of ~300 rpm,

o

but the disks are still not readable. I tried to connect 2nd contact to the common one - no
changes. Maybe somewhere else you need to hang the jumper?

I wish you good luck. Igor.

Greetings, oh venerable Igor!

[Wednesday June 28, 2000] at [12:59:49] Igor Zhadinets wrote a letter to All.
They discussed the topic "TEAC FD-55GFR 193-U". Let's continue what we started...

IZ> Maybe someone has rebuilt Subj to read DD/DS disks?

And the subject on 1.2M, HD?

IZ> Tell me how to achieve normal operation.
IZ> After moving the jumpers to the specified position

Aren't the jumpers labeled?

IZ> I managed to achieve a disk rotation speed of ~300 rpm,

[skip]

IZ> but the disks are still not readable.

I had the same situation with 'Mitsumi' (5.25", 1.2Mb). There were _two_ different
jumpers, each with two positions: one was responsible for the speed (300/360), and
the other -
for HD/DD.

IZ> I tried to connect the 2nd contact
IZ> to the common one - no changes.

I found some tattered piece of paper here :) with my notes.
Reading...

2nd contact FDD (input):

log."0" - HD
log."1" - DD

At least, these are the levels I set offtopic cartoon, when trying to
enable HD or DD on a 1.44 (3.5") flop.

IZ> Maybe somewhere else the jumper
IZ> needs to be attached?

Try to lather Kirill Frolov (absent until the second half of July;
2:5030/827.2, Kirill Frolov). It seems that the subject (1.2 MB) easily worked for him on Speck.

Sincerely, Felix.

From Igor Zhadinets To All 4 July 2000

Thanks for the advice, everything is OK. It turned out that the spring pressing the head
jumped off and therefore the drive did not read. Those jumpers that
drew are enough.

IZ>> I tried to connect the 2nd contact to the common one - no changes.

FK> I found some tattered piece of paper here :) with my notes.
FK> Reading...

FK> 2nd contact FDD (input):

FK> log."0" - HD

Reads disks at any logical level at this input.

P.S. No one has adjusted the drive using SPECCY at home, otherwise
the last tracks are hard to read?

I wish you good luck. Igor.

Sorry - I’m from the Internet...
I have a PDF for this device from the TIK site...
there’s a description of the jumps - you won’t find a more complete one...
what can I say - a watch is a watch :)
I’m not sure that my yuyuka will reach you
maybe you have a mailbox on the internet?
let me know with soap - I'll wash it...
posting in the echo is also not the point - I read through Fido-online, again from the Internet

Thank you for your attention, goodbye

Both your own and other people’s (discs)? Check the quality (strength) of the clamping mechanism. Clean the heads of the

Subject? I only have a Panasonic 1.2 as I read, the ticks are sabzhevy

Connect headphones to the DATA output on the cable. Twist your heads until the signal becomes
as loud as possible. A floppy disk, of course you need a reference one. MAS did this, it seemed
okay.

I tried it, it didn’t help. But when you move the head a little with the handles, it reads.

There is such a program - USTIR. But, if you haven't done tuning before, then I don't recommend it. Many craftsmen, having seen how someone else sets it up,
try it themselves, and as a result - the upper head is torn off ;)

It’s already working - the pressure spring just flew off the head. It does not depend on the level on
the second contact and the jumpers should be exactly as I
drew.

I probably took your letter as a basis when I varied the jumpers.

Greetings, Dmitry

Once Tue 11 Jul 2000 at 18:51:54 there was a conflict

DN> Gee. The only time in my life when I cleaned the heads of

DN> at all ;)

Well, this is probably about the question of the configuration of the hands and where they grow. ;) And
what did you clean it with? A very used cleaning floppy disk can bend the top head.

DN> Well, nothing, I changed the heads, adjusted them - it still works :)

IMHO the top head was torn off. It? Or he smeared the accumulated dirt.

From Felix Knajzev To All 13 July 2000

IZ>>> P.S. No one has adjusted the drive using SPECCY in

FK>> I recently did this, only on a 720Kb FDD.

IZ> Well, please tell me how you did it and what
IZ> results.

The results are positive. Except for the fact that there was an attempt to make the head unit from the 360Kb only drive (two sides, 40 tracks per side,
_double_step_) work like 2x80. The heads for these formats have
design differences that I didn’t know about (reading 2x80 works flawlessly, write/format is a bummer). Everything was done on a Bulgarian-made FDD EC5323.01.

If problems with reading on foreign disks occur on _both_ heads, then you can
get by with adjusting only the stepper motor (SM). This is what I did.
Adjusting one head relative to another is no practice.

I used the following software:

1. DCU_v2.01
2. ADS_v2.00+
3. "Solonov" program for checking/adjusting flops

The most difficult thing, in my case, was adjusting the 0-track sensor. There are two settings:
move the sensor itself, use the adjusting screw (if any, it limits
the movement of the head block on the 0th track). What needs to be achieved:

1. With the LIST command, the directory should be displayed the first time without any problems.
2. Under step 1 there should be no cracking sound (the block of heads hits the limiter,
trying to go beyond the 0thtrack).

It is convenient to connect a voltmeter to the photodiode of the 0th track sensor and control
the moment of switching. Ideally, find a circuit in the drive circuit where there is a signal
"Photodiode->Schmitt trigger", i.e. remove the signal after the Schmitt trigger. At a
low level, the reading quality of track 0 can be checked in the above
software.

Adjustment step. engine. I _didn't_ use either headphones
for this (connected after amplifiers, technology a la *MAS*), or an oscilloscope (due to
absence).

1. I formatted a high-quality floppy disk on a more or less compatible disk drive.
2. Loosened the screws securing the motor to the frame (the motor can be moved with difficulty by hand).
3. Loaded FUT, ran 'Check disk'.
4. I move the motor with my hands in the direction of movement of the heads (and vice versa) until the test passes normally.
5. I tighten the screws a little.
6. I achieve the “golden mean” by moving the motor using the tip of a screwdriver
inserted between the motor and the frame (the screwdriver works as a lever).
7. After step 6 I finally tighten the screws.

That's it. If you have an oscilloscope, everything becomes much simpler.

Nope. The floppy disk was just new. At the same time, together with it we cleaned
2 other floppers - everything was ok :( But... only the next day :)

From Felix Knajzev To All 16 July 2000

FK>> smeared.
DN> Yes, I guess not. Everything looked ok. And there wasn’t much dirt there
DN> (strange as
DN> is :)

I can only assume that the dirt was smeared after all.
I had this happen once: I had to format a bunch of _heavily_ used
(downright dirty) and noname floppy disks. After some time, the drive
suddenly stopped working normally. There was no time for “manual” cleaning -
I used a floppy disk -> again it reads poorly. I made a hole in the h-disk for an index
-> marker and
cleaned the heads by issuing the 'list' command (to reposition the heads) in bare
TR-DOS (v5.03), while still working the drive door (on/off). Only in
this case everything was cleaned properly.

First, you need to ring the windings of the faulty head with an ohmmeter and compare it with
the readings of a known working one. Maybe there is a banal break somewhere (connector, wire, the windings themselves). Further - depending on the result.

Make it simpler: compare the output resistance of a head that is known to be good and one
that is “in question.”

DR> There are heads divided into

DR> or does one do everything?

There are three heads. One is read-write. The winding of this head is made "with a tap from the middle." Each half has a resistance of ~15...25 Ohm. The other two (located on the sides of the rd/wr head) are heads for forming tunnel
erasure current.
The winding has (one winding per two heads) a resistance of ~ 0.5...2 Om'a. _All_
windings are connected in series.
