Standard extensions

ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»

From Sergey Zotov To All 16 May 2001

Hi, All!

I remember there was already such a subj. Someone found out which one-letter extensions
are standard. Could you please send me the full list or add to the one below? Attention! Only one-letter extensions are needed, and if they
are used by only one program or in a file with such an extension its structure is precisely known. For example, X - XAS. Or W - ZX Word.

A - asm
B - Basic
C - code block
D - data array
E -
F -
G -
H - alasm
I - sound sample
J - jpg (?)
K -
L -
M -
N -
O -
P -
Q -
R -
S -
T - txt
U -
V -
W - zx word
X - XAS
Y - 3 color screen
Z - zx zip

If everyone works quickly, the software will soon be released. ;)
Thanks in advance.

File extensions TR-DOS
────────────────────────

("Radio amateur.Your computer" 12/2000)

Imagine this situation: you came across a TR-DOS file,
and it was unclear what was in it. We tried to look
the contents - and only saw that it was not text... What to do
next? Erase this file? This, of course, is the easiest way, and it will free up space
on the disk. :-) But who knows what you will
lose? What if it was there? something useful or at least interesting?
It is much more correct not to erase an unfamiliar file right away, but
take a closer look at its extension first. Then, using
the table of extensions given in this article, you can
draw conclusions about the type of information contained in the file and what programs can be used to work with it.
And how to see it, is this extension? “What a stupid question?” -
you will think. But not everything is as simple as it might seem at first glance :-) The point is: initially in TR-DOS the file extension was one-character, and there were only four extensions. Later this seemed not enough, and the software writers decided to increase the length of the extension to three
characters - just like in MS-DOS. TR-DOS
in order to ensure the ability to work correctly with three-character
extensions using the operating system, no one started.
On the one hand, this is correct - after all, any change in the ROM can
lead toinoperability of existing programs. But this also leads to certain inconveniences - when executing the "CAT" command, only the first character of the extension of each
file is shown. You can see the extension in full only with the help of
special shell programs - for example, "Real Commander".
A few words about the table. It is formed according to the following principle: if there is a TR-DOS program that processes files with a given extension, it is included in the table. Thus,
in addition to the “purely Spectrum”
extensions known to me at that moment, there were also extensions of some types of files
that first appeared on other computer platforms
(AMiGA, PC). At the same time, the table also shows the names of
TR-DOS programs for working with such files (for example, files
with the "zip" extension can be processed using the program
"pkunZIP 1.3f").
Extensions in the table are listed in alphabetical order.
The table may also be useful for program authors in
the case when it becomes necessary to choose an extension for
"their" file format. To avoid confusion, it is
better to choose either an extension that has not yet been used or one that is most
appropriate in meaning.
The information given in the table has been collected from various
sources and from our own observations.Of course, it is not
absolutely complete, so send clarifications and
additions - they will be included in the latest version of this article, which
will be regularly posted on my web page.

Hello, Ivan!

IR> ║ PKT, pkt │ Postal package. ║

IR> ║ SCR, scr │ Screen file ║

or screen saver from Windows ;)

IR> ║ v │ Vector image created in graphic ║

vi1 (64 bytes in size) - m/s CMOS dump. The CMOS Commander program is created,
it writes all 64 registers to a file, but when reading, it restores only the data registers (which start from 0Eh inclusive) into the
CMOS chip.
This extension was invented because the Soviet analogue of this m/s is 512VI1.

IR> ║ ZIP │ ZXZIP Archive ║

zxz - the same thing. In MSDOS and ISDOS, ZXZIP is often renamed to ZXZ. On
Spectrum you need to rename it back to ZIP accordingly.

com, set, bat, res, ovr -may be from ISDOS. Especially if there are numerous commands (except
bat ;) there are LD C,n:RST 16

mnu - shell menu in ISDOS

img - disk image in ISDOS. There may not necessarily be an ISDOS disk (it could easily be a renamed TRD), because it’s just a dump like TRD. Under
ISDOS there is a program image.com which deploys this image to a floppy disk.

Regards, Evgeniy.
