ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»

From Konstantin Shaev To All 21 August 2002

Greetings, oh venerable Maxim Latysh!

Indeed, I would really like to thank you for your wonderful and
valuable comments on the topic “Structure of a PKZIP archive”!
Your invaluable contribution to the history of the ZX Spectrum and its software
will not be forgotten by many, many generations, praising your constructive and integral
advice and recommendations.
Thank you from all subscribers of the echo and, especially, from everyone who has been following a very traffic-heavy topic lately (see above).
I also express my personal gratitude and I hope that I WILL NOT SEE YOU AGAIN
EVER IN THIS ECHO, but I will see you (maybe) in the echo of RU.aMIGA (which, as you
think, is still in charge).
But, like, if I see you on another, more constructive and an echoey topic, then
it will be cool. And if with flames and chatter, THEN I WILL BE FORCED TO WRITE
TO THE MODERATOR ECHI - and this risks disconnecting your boss from ECHI, which may not please the more aggressive and negatively-minded readers on your site
(they will punch you in the face, they will punch you in the face, they will break your mug, etc. (c) Narodny folklore)!
So, be careful in your destructive urges to desecrate
MY FAVORITE ECHO!!!
For this, I take my leave and hope that with my rude letter I didn’t
clog up the echo too much.

Sincerely,

=== DI:2s0(nato)R from Beatstorm / Artificial Intelligence ===

p.s. Even though I'm in the armynow, but... speck didn’t quit like you.

Some kind of national enmity is simple!
And as for the topic - it’s so easy to do. On PC there are some
pkzip unpackers - you find the emails of their authors and write to them!
If you don’t find/they won’t answer - then it seems like the author is still alive
sn - so you write to him - it seems like he did something like that there.
In addition, I think I even saw the source codes of sn - so you can
look there.
In the end, there are sources of the zip itself - so everything there is generally
transparent.
Act.

what a shame that those who understand these source codes do not want to remake them on ZX, and

because hrip cannot be unpacked unzip, which has not been ported to
programmable calculators.

once again. Pkzip on the spec is needed to simplify *cross-platform*
communication; for intra-platform there are still traditional packers
optimized for the filesystem. on spec it's zxzip/hrip. on amiga - lha
(sort of), under wintel - rar/7z, etc. and at the same time *everywhere* there is unzip.

So, not really - I’m afraid that on a spec zip is unlikely to work as

I understand this perfectly. But the zip is needed in order to transfer
software to offtopics - it’s not easier to make a wheeze on all offtopics, and not
pervert with a heavy zip - fortunately the author of the wheeze seems to be accessible.

On amiga - #?.lzx. #?.lha is just cross-platform. On PC/Mac it
is usually called #?.lzh, except for linux - there is normal #?.lha.

At the moment we definitely need a zip archiver.

the number of Spectrum users is not comparable with the number of offtopic users. it is physically impossible to equip all of them with unhrips (even if they are ported).
and at the same time they are all equipped with unzips. thus, you need
to port pkzip once and distribute it among a limited circle of
Spectrum'ists, instead of porting unhrip several times (to different
platforms) and distributing it among an unlimited number of
offtopic users.

in addition, zip archives are used in heterogeneous FTN networks, while
hrip obviously will not be used there (except perhaps only in purely
Spec networks).

if we consider a specific situation when you need to frequently transfer files
to the same friend, then of course it is more profitable to supply this
most friend onceunhrip/unzxzip.

Do you think we are drawing up a business plan?
The most important fact is that the wheeze is transferred to offtopics are ten times
simpler (faster) than zip to spec. This is the time.
Further, it is obvious that in general there is little need to unpack Spec's software on the office with
great frequency. Generally speaking, you described everything so well
and you yourself worked in Fido from spec?
I can tell you that that insignificant part of the soap, which goes
from the point to the node, does not need compression at all, since
a high level of compression is supported by the modem itself.
As for Varez compression, this is now being successfully done
in the wheeze - I’m certainly not happy with the offtopic, but that’s my problem.
If I need the program, then I’ll have to find opportunities
to view it myself. If there were wheezing on the offtopic right now, then again
I repeat, IMHO the question would be settled.
And I just think that wheezing programs are distributed anyway
in a rather narrow circle of offtopic users, so I don’t agree at all with the speed
of distribution of unhrip.

Zizh Now, if there weren’t unzip on the spec, then there would definitely be a
problem.
