In my opinion, if the board was made intelligently, it would turn out to be a reliable
ZX with the ability to use any extensions for the ISA bus. Even those who forgot about ZX a long time ago would want to install this unit for themselves. The main thing
is that the attractiveness is very high.

Well, what good is it? External models are much more expensive, but ISA Courier from the trash heap
wouldn't be bad at all. I have not seen any diagrams for connecting modems to RS232 that still work. In addition to everything else, you will have to write software for it.

So? I agree that the board is cool - at least the best there is. But it has a lot of shortcomings, which actually prevents its spread. Firstly, ALTERA is difficult for homemade use; secondly, the ISA is 8-bit and not 16. Thirdly, it is not an open source platform - which makes distribution and development very difficult. Well, maybe I would have paid $110 for this if I knew that if something crashed, I could repair it myself and not order the next board for $110 from
the other side of the Earth.

For fun, it would be to have a ZX whose main board would be expanded with an ISA 16bit
adapter into which you could then shove ISA cards with other processors -
accelerators and svga cards.

In this situation, those who do not need ISA could stop at assembling a regular
ZX; others would go further and connect an ISA adapter which would give them
the ability to use MIO/SB; still others would assemble an accelerator, say, on the 8088 with its own firmware, which would reset the svga adapter standing on the same bus and, pulling it directly from memory via the ISA bus, would display the Spectrum screen on it; That would be ita truly viable computer - on the one hand, not weakly expandable and on the other, fully compatible with ZX.

If you don’t understand something, then it’s always your problem. Either upgrade your
interface through which you “understand” conduct, or forget about this flow of information - but
don’t bother with stupid attacks. This applies not only to the ZX but in general to all things
in life - it’s stupid to focus on something that you either don’t care about or don’t understand anything about.

Altera has already been used there for you, you are given a finished product. Why would you go there with a soldering iron? For the life of me I don’t understand. Next, what does ISA have to do with it?
There is no ISA bus, there is an ISA slot into which you can install

I just don’t understand - why are there 16 bits? You've seen a lot of these cards for pussy, what other ones can you stick in the spec? Can you imagine
what is connected there on the second half of the slot? I'll answer for you - the first 8
interruptions are not enough. Forget about the soundblaster, the “HDD controller” (exactly what’s
in quotes) and network cards, as well as about SVGA.

From Andrey Romanenko To All 8 June 2004

KF> These are mutually exclusive conditions. It turns out to be a pussy, in its purest form.

No! For me this is not PC. This is just ZX expanded due to PC hardware. Since
all old software should work with minimal modifications and new software
could use new hardware. It’s just that when I see in the echoes some
suggestions like yours - to cut off the ISA modem with WIRES - all I can think about is that 10 years have passed since Kondratiev came up with this idea and there is still
no normal implementation. I’m generally silent about other circuits, all sorts of sound drives and
other things - are PC ISA 16bit cards really so bad that you don’t
connect them to the ZX instead of all this glucodrome? And then look at what’s happening on the same Amiga - first someone screwed on the ISA bus; now PCI. Believe me,
There is nothing wrong with a ZX having a standard tire with a ton of features
- that doesn’t stop it from being a ZX.

??? Don't you understand? I just don’t understand how it was possible to make such a crippled bus as in the Sprinter... was it really a bummer to make a normal
16bit ISA. I don't see any reason to use only 8bit MIO from all the variety of cards. And why should I forget about the idea of expanding ZX with other hardware? Maybe you can tell me to forget something else?

And you’re wondering what kind of work you propose to do? Instead of one ISA controller, you propose to implement just a piece of MIO card directly on the main board - well, what's the point? This is despite the fact that it was already possible to build a COM port on the same Profi with simply incredible efforts (both in terms of money and setup), accordingly, a lesson was learned, but apparently not everyone remembers it. This
doesn’t look reasonable because you can find MIO at a radio flea market for ~$1...4
without any problems. In addition, as I understand it, making an ISA 16bit controller on the same Atmel or another z80 is much easier than assembling a COM port.

Ignorance is bliss!

As far as you understand, it’s not about what you, or some other
individuals think, because despite food processors, many people use an ordinary
knife for slicing vegetables...

And if someone is interested in this, then it has a place to be, which means its development
is quite possible at least in narrow circles.

You were given this ISA. Just an upgrade of some rubbish. It seems that
in another ten years they will be discussing connecting SATA screws and
AGP cards, just like today ISA - while resoldering
shrunken connectors and torn tracks on 720kb in exactly the same way disk drives.

I agree, but this no longer looks like development, but like death throes.
Modern technology makes it possible to “hide” the entire Spectrum in one crystal
with a retail cost of $25-30. And to do this with a noticeable improvement in its
characteristics both in terms of video output and processor clock frequency. This
this, IMHO, will be a development, but assembling the same thing on discontinued
chips - what kind of development is this?

From Andrew V. Miheev To All 8 June 2004

Yes, I use it myself. Only you confuse technology with basic necessities. Technology has gone far ahead and given birth to a food processor, which complements but does not replace a regular knife, which is an essential item (in the kitchen in particular). The Spectrum was born as a gaming machine, and a little developing one. And he was born a long time ago. Since then, both gaming and development technologies have gone far ahead. Very far away. And the Spectrum today
can be a Rarity, "Retro", nostalgia... anything, but not a modern
game development machine. Given its architecture, it is difficult to “develop” it further
without losing compatibility with older software. Hence my opinion about the "development" of the Spectrum.

Let's face it, nonsense. Have you seen the NEMO IDE controller diagram? Here's a full-fledged "ISA 16bit controller" with fine logic that's 2 times larger. This is if without DMA. Otherwise, add more DMA sound there.

Us we can't understand each other with you. Unlike you, I make my living by developing hardware and programs and I see “development” not in rosy colors, like
you, but in modern reality. Ensuring commercial demand for a car that has no buyers (five of your friends don't count - I have a hundred friends who have or want to have cell phones and this is in demand) is simply
unrealistic. And if there is no commercial demand, then there is no development. More precisely, it exists at the level of “enthusiasm” of individuals who have a desire to “develop”, know how to do it, and have the opportunity to do it for free. Among the Spectrumists there are very few of them and you are clearly not one of them you relate. >

Mode of increasing memory while preserving the modes of existing ones. And regarding
improving the characteristics of the video output, the video processor is described in the ZX-Review, IMHO, 1996, there is multicolor. And the processor frequency is a double-edged sword,
you write a program at a frequency higher than the standard one, and whoever has a computer with
the standard one flies by, it already looks like PC.

To “hide” you need to hire a team of 10 people, pay each person $5000 per month for a year, and this does not take into account the costs of equipment and rent - the development of your device will amount to millions if you go into mass production with it. And maybe tens of millions if you get involved in marketing and the market. It’s clear that ZX is no longer relevant for such actions.
Enthusiasts can easily do this for themselves. And a $30 chip is more of a problem than a solution for them.

The frequency can be adjusted on the go. Let's assume that this single-chip miracle is launched as a Spectrum with a Z80 at 33 Megahertz, and on the menu screen there is a choice of frequency and compatibility parameters. I chose "Standard" and download the standard Spectrum program for your health - everything will work. I need to do something serious and need speed - I went to the speed selection menu and
selected the highest possible - get a high-performance 8-bit
machine, partially compatible with the Spectrum.

Why write about something you don’t understand? The Speckrum scheme is simply
“hidden” in PLISin by one person. You take a development environment like Quartus and “redraw” the Spectrum diagram in its graphic editor. This is about a week, if you take your time and carefully. Next, you take the already completed Z80
model on VHDL and add it to the project. This is about another week, taking into account the linking
of signals and time for debugging. You register all this in PLISina and get a
complete copy of the Spectrum in one crystal. You check it in operation and then
begin to improve it - add another port for video output to
memory, memory protection for different applications from each other, a video processor, etc.
etc.. For this, another month of hard work or 3-4 months, if not in a hurry. As a result, you get a super-duper Spectrum with various bells and whistles
which you can turn on and off right on the go programmatically.

From Andrew V. Miheev To All 10 June 2004

Hmm... Very interesting, how did you manage to upgrade a 16-bit machine
to a 32-bit one? About 10 years ago I worked closely and repaired PS/2 and I know
these machines quite well - there are no hints on the motherboards about upgrading
to 32-bit. Moreover, the use of the “features” of the PS/2 architecture generally forced us to abandon the idea of upgrading it. The screw and flopstick on them had
special connectors where, along with the signals, power was supplied to one
loop and to install a standard flopik or screw, you had to pick up a soldering iron.

I have already expressed my opinion on this matter. Especially for you: I believe
that the development of the Spectrum will be the transfer of its scheme and all its extensions,
improvements and additions to a modern element base, allowing any of
extensions and additions to be turned on and off programmatically at
arbitrary moments in time without a hot or cold reboot of the entire
system. Technically, this is possible and the hardware costs around $100-150 per finished product.

There is no point in buying, so to speak, a fancy car, and using it at 30%

and therefore the overpayment is useless.

What the hell is an upgrade. No matter what the Spectrum is, no one will buy it anyway,
