too late to revive... see below.
AK> smile, someone will just say a bad word. But I need information and
AK> your opinion, All.
ok. tankere... Specky died. didn't die completely, but died so that it would be bought at least half as often as x86. No programs are written on it that would satisfy the capabilities of the average user. On top of everything else, in the current configuration he has no chance of having similar programs in his soft luggage. There is only one solution to this problem: change
configuration! but we can see what comes of this from the example of
Sprinter. the development of an essentially new computer, its production, support
of programmers in order to saturate the software market - all this results in a lot of money.
Consequently, a new computer will cost a lot of money. Note: this is a computer
for which there is almost no software yet!.. let's leave the fairy tales that there will soon be software to the children; remember the Sprinter situation.
a stillborn child is what the “new Spectrum” is... alas.
The Spectrum, like the Commodore, cannot be revived. his evolutionary path is over. The only niche in which he can now rule (and rules) is demomaking. ideal computer for demo.
I see the only upgrade that can be done nowto Specky -
percent quickly... so that the new demos don't slow down ;)
AK> We'll talk about the AZX project.
forget it... nothing will come of it. It will turn out to be something worthwhile only if
it costs about the same as a regular Scorpion
(well, maybe twice as expensive) and fully supports the old software
while having a bunch of new things...
// under no circumstances should you write me down as a spectrum hater.
I love and respect Spectrum. but it is not possible to see him somewhere doing office work (x86 niche) or graphics or video (Amiga niche). alas... the train has left.

I'll clarify. "New Spectrum" is no longer a Spectrum. The evolution is over, yes.
As for ideality for the demo, that’s not my area of expertise. But for many, the Spectrum remains the only normal computer. For many, it is their own
child, created with their own hands (right now I’ll tell you: not a member ;)).
You can put it this way: Spectrum, for me personally, as a computer scientist, is like Jesus
Christ for believers.
I don’t know how else to express my thought. Kirill Frolov will flame and say everything for me - he is better at expressing thoughts ;)

I agree, but still - RULEZZ. And I won’t be able to fall asleep if I don’t look at the Spekov screen before going to bed... :)
And the toys on the Spectrum are still more fun. Although I may be a pervert for wire graphics, it doesn’t and never will be better and more soulful.

Don’t go too far - for everyone, the platform with which they started is the best. I started on Speccy, and now I have become “multi-platform”, because I write

Oh, your horizons are narrow! Is this all that computers are capable of? Office and
video? Hmm... Narrow. There are dozens more niches that the NEW Spectrum can occupy under normal configuration... Which ones? Off the top of my head: a home gaming computer, a replacement for all sorts of segas and dandies (for those who can’t afford a PC). In addition to games, it is an excellent educational tool for computer literacy. Here you need a powerful and inexpensive video processor. More? Building security system. Until recently, one of the Odessa companies had a Spectrum and it controlled surveillance cameras. I don’t
know what’s going on in that company now, because... my friend who worked in thiscompany, and who wrote programs for them left it. Maybe it still stands there to this day. Not a single virtuoso PC hacker can handle such a thing. No experience. In general, where automation is required, a Spectrum may be suitable, but for this you need the RIGHT APPROACH in its creation!!!!!

It's disgusting for me to hear this.... Do you know what this all reminds me of? I’ll explain right now.
The Spectrum can be compared to a child. Who lives and tries to grow up, gain strength, become smarter and more experienced... But then the supporting parents appear (that's us, speckie users) and say: “You are dead for us! Because you are trying to grow up and
you will not be the same as you were born! We are giving up on you! That’s it...” Well, how is it similar??? Are you sitting on your stump? Well, sit down! But real-life people need a grown Spectrum!
I don’t understand why the hell you’re yelling at all corners that the Spectrum is dying? He is now at such a stage that one more step and he has already reached his limit! He will reach a dead end of monotony (this process has already begun if you haven’t noticed). It needs new
breath,
so that an endless field of action and
possibilities will open up for our great minds. Similar statementsyou're just cutting off oxygen and preventing people from doing anything! If coordinated measures are not taken now, then the further process will go like a locomotive that cannot be stopped - OBLIGATION... It will die... You are already creating all the
prerequisites...

It’s better to keep silent about reliability. There are inexpensive (not in comparison with home

Again, I already wrote, but I will repeat - Spectrum will never die until the last fan dies. I was just on the website of a German club - there pensioners rejoice like children if they soldered the Plus D interface to themselves. And from now on they don’t think about whether it’s worth doing it or not. They are kicking as hard as they can just at the thought that the Spectrum already has 4MB of memory and crying that they can’t watch Russian demos or play Russian games. They know very well what Russian programmers on Speccy are capable of and they are tearing the hair out of their ass at the thought that they have to watch it all in emulsion. It is precisely these people, who do not think about the meaning of the Spectrum's development, who will
keep this platform alive. I understand perfectly well the situation in Russia and your situation, but nevertheless you make the best software. Compare even the latest demos from Russia and abroad. This is not licking your butt - this is a fact that will remain a fact today and tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. That's why I opened the project, and that's why I came to you with the idea. And the first letter
received on this issue back then at the conference of the Yaroslavl museum was a pure mockery of everything that I proposed. And almost the same reaction occurs here from the majority. Mr. Knyazev even wrote to me that “we don’t need this,” meaning, it seems, the whole echo.Well, it’s not necessary, it’s not necessary.
Sorry for the trouble, you won’t hear a word from me about the project anymore.
Those who are really interested in this will write to me and we’ll sort it out ourselves
. And please don’t tell me that by saving you all from
unnecessary information, I’m lowering the platform. On the contrary, I raise it, but
unnoticed by you, so as not to receive more such letters in the spirit of “you can’t,
forget, die”

AK> Mr. Knyazev even
AK> wrote to me that
AK> “we don’t need this,” meaning, it seems, the whole echo. Well, no,
AK> it’s not necessary.
I wrote: “we won’t be able to buy it” and “we realized it too late.” Slightly
different things, agree. Yes, now you can easily get a bunch of free stuff
(TTL-DIP) from the PC and other little things, BUT:
PCB + CPU is $$$. That's a lot of $$$. It will always sell
only for $$$. All this and what is written above applies to Russia and the CIS only. $
in Russia is a value with a variable positive increment coefficient.
Are there any objections? Just don’t say that a true Spectrumist (in the best sense of the word) will take off his last pants, but will buy this Miracle. I also know that money is being earned. This is the financial side.
More. IMHO. Maybe it will be “easier” for everyone (including me) if your Monstrum is not
mentioned in the context of Speck in his cash configuration? That is,
a completely new, _different_ platform on a Z80-compatible processor.
The Spectrum scene is too inertial (I hope it’s clear that the _main_ZX models,
which were/are being produced over a _long_time_ serially
[Russia, CIS], in _large_quantities_ are computers with the resources
of the performance of the ZX-Spectrum) so that just like that, right away, you can perceive a computer with
SUCH capabilities. Will these new RESOURCES be used at least 99% (massively writing NEW software for a NEW machine?) or will a huge amount of 128K software (if the computer “promises” at least 98% ZX compatibility) will simply work “a little
faster”?... There is not enough platform performance/capabilities - change the platform! The choice is great. Or maybe this is the notorious PC race for megahertz and
megabytes?...
And the last thing. Everything _new_ in the field of hard and software has always been received with a bang by Spectrumists, only during "de facto" such events. We have already been fed with demo versions and promises of “coming soon”. Isn't this one of the main
reasons for the skepticism (not "obscurity"!) that falls on your project? If you make a car, do it! Someone
helps you - wonderful! Only they _expect_ from you not empty talk ("whoever is not with us is against us!"), when the project is only "on paper", but a real message
"... a _ready_ printed circuit board with assembly documentation and a processor can
be ordered there and costit
will be so much...". After that, of course, you will say that I am
"lazy" and a "slower of progress" or something even stronger ;(. Speak...

(the thread “An open letter to everyone”) or just an invitation to work together
(message from Ars here almost a year ago). And I never promised you anything,
everywhere it was clearly written “I want to see this car with such and such
opportunities,” but nowhere was (and will not be) “starting from 2000
you and I will all together change to our AZX".
From Andreas Kaiser → To All 5 February 2000
This mode is comparable only to CGA, which is not enough for you anymore, because it’s offtopic
you’ve seen enough. You need SVGA and this can be done by plowing the entire board from start to finish. But only after this you will get a new car, which will COST MONEY, but which you don’t have. Therefore, it is better to stop any discussions like “I want this”. Better save up for the Sprinter, it's worth it. And then we will no longer think about all sorts of monsters, etc.
The problem is that people here want something, but there is no money for this “something”.
And it is not the fault of these people, not at all! Then it’s just not worth having
any conversations here about new architecture, etc., but adhere to the opinion of
Captain Nemo and write demos under 64KB.

You’re absolutely right! This is the Spectrum, but at the Z80+128K+TR-DOS+AY level. So
why not at least make another screen? After all, all these multicolors and 3colors appeared only because of the author’s desire to somehow improve the capabilities of his program. Those. These are all attempts to make up for what is missing!
So why not fix this by using the processor “to the fullest”, but install
a new device in the Spectrum, which would give this new screen. At least
512x384x256 colors. And on the TV it will pull and the visible area will already increase by 4 times. I already know that many will advise me that the system in general is not designed for this. Well, this is the main reason for all sorts of “monster-like projects”. I was going to just expand the screen and
depth at firstpalettes. But this cannot be done without “sacrifices”. After all, the most important thing that the platform currently lacks is a screen and more colors. Mr. Knyazev was even going to “tear off my balls” (I apologize) and everyone like me for messing with the structure of the Speccy screen. But this is the first problem (or desire
of users, regardless of status) that stands in the way of the development of the platform.
After all, the memory has already been expanded, everything that can be (or almost everything) has been connected, but
the screen has hardly been touched yet. What do you need for this? Only three 8
bit DACs, 256K (512K) statics and fast logic of video memory address counters +
scan master circuits. All this can be done on a more or less
cheap Altera, and use Ivan Mak’s path to change
then the circuit dynamically (well, maybe someone will then optimize the circuit and it
will work even faster). As Ivan told me, you can’t put anything analog into Altera, but all the counters and all sorts of scan generators are already
possible. This is exactly what I’m doing now, but I’m still in a bit of a mess, because I don’t know how to handle Altera yet. Although I saw one site on the Internet where they told how they built a VGA accelerator on Altera. I can also give a link to those who wish, if interested. Therefore, the second goal of such “monstrous” projects (don’t sleep, Mr. Knyazev, what would he tell me again later, that you didn’t see this in the echo
to unite the efforts of all those interested in the Spectrum. After all
there are so many smart people who already know the Spectrum inside and out.

I thought. Well thought. Suitable.
ZX-Spectrum was conceived by the Creator as a _domestic_ (read - non-professional)
game-learning platform. This is called
"platform concept". The fact that there were so many hidden resources in it is, for the most part, the merit of the programmers. Of course, it couldn't have happened without a hard drive either, but it fit in extremely _organically_. It was like small “outbuildings”,
each of which had more or less native origin (England. The same
BETA-DISK, Kempston Mouse, for example, and a bunch of other things. All of this was just
stuck into the ZX-BUS). And each such “add-on” simply made working with the machine more and more _convenient_, _without_changing_ the “core”
(Z80/3.5MHz/128Kb/256x192x16) of the platform itself.
Offtopic... Immediately everything was put into commercial use, because it
could have been assembled by almost any, not very blind, Chinese Sun-Wyn
(Hardware copying of Speck, if, of course, you remember, was held back by the PLM 'ULA',
which, IMHO, could only be "seen through" in
the former USSR only.). ALittle Billy, as luck would have it, decided to write DOS under THIS
. And away we go... The platform began to bring
_money_ to everyone who was not too lazy to solder a crooked piece of hardware or write a couple of lines on PaskaKAL. By the way, about Billy. He immediately realized that this was a “fishing place” and began to churn out Mazdas, each subsequent version of which REQUIRED different hardware so that the vomiting would not distract too much and often from the main work.
Sorry for the off-topic.

as you understand, the most difficult thing is the screw ;)
a la Nemo I didn't want to do it, we need full compatibility with the old software, so that
no one knew that the screw was working instead of a floppy disk (unless you can
understand by the speed, but it's easier to slow down than to speed up). hence - port emulation with
all that it implies. The pump speed, with some distortions, reaches 700 kilos per second. here ;) I wanted to make the text screen overlay on the main one, so that,
say, on a border you could draw in the background ;) a downloadable font,
pixel-by-pixel scrolling ;) all this is done by very simple means.
for the modem and the screw, you also need to emulate the makeshift native bus (I even came up with a scheme so that everything would be synchronous - setting the address, data, control).
all this, according to According to estimates, it fit into the eight-buck Altera. wires -

If it weren’t for SPBZXNET, it would have died in 1997.
Now many people are getting both screws and watches, and fidoshniks already
have modems.
Kondratyev made an almost full-fledged mailer in isdos, but as always, without
STS processing it cannot be used. :-( But this mailer is of no use
, the entire file must be transferred back to TR-DOS and read in Lara.
And the mail does not fit on one disk yet. The screw in TR-DOS is a useless thing for the most part
, there is no right here. But there is no machine for Fido from isdos either. There is no
program
There is no way to write a large one, nor can you work with the files normally, unless
bypassing the isdos itself. Well, the segmentation of the mailer log and the mail
database will grow and quickly exceed 85 segments is also clear - they are
not written separately, but simultaneously and in small parts. which
in ZX.SPECTRUM they invent...
IMHO CP/M would be suitable, at least there the only unchangeable
part is the BDOS function set, the rest can be upgraded at your own
discretion, for example, you can make it all work on MS-DOS or IS-DOS
disks, while 99% of programs will not lose compatibility. Only system
utilities (such as the ancient POWER.COM) directly access the disk. CP/M also provides a C compiler and, most importantly, compatibility (partial) with the Orion PC and other Z80-based computers. This is an opportunity to increase the number of users
of the platform (such a downgrade...), more new software.

Isn’t it in Native Mode?
I’m writing again - the Z380 has two modes of operation, Native Mode and Extended Mode.
Native Mode is the same as the Z80, all registers are polled as 32
bits, in which the high half is filled with zeros, and the low half is the same as
in the Z80. The PC address counter only counts from 0 to 65535, all 4GB
of memory are available, but with one “condition” - all program code must be in
the first 64K, the rest of the space can be used for data
(a good opportunity to programmatically emulate all your Pros and Pentagon-512).
In Extended Mode, all registers are also 32-bit, but the PC counts everything 4GB.
There are no restrictions on the location of the code (i.e. in all 4GB). Addressing
linear. Registers R and I are also 32-bit. In Native Mode you can
use the main part of the Extended Mode commands, i.e. transfer operations from
memory to memory (or to port) can be completely 32-bit. All ports
32-bit (4GB ports). I don't know for sure about processing undocumented commands, but in my opinion they are not supported. In any case, there is an interesting TRAP flag, which catches such mockery in the form of undocumented commands and generates an interrupt, the highest level above all. In my opinion, this percent is better than the eZ80. But this is only in
my opinion.
With respect
Andreas
