New text editor for Spectrumists
ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»
From Vladimir Burenin → To All 13 May 1999
I have an idea to make a text editor for specky under
512x192 pixels mode.
What suggestions would you have?
The size of the visible text will be 80x22, but with the length of the text, who knows,
I’ll probably have to make a keel like this for 300, accordingly it won’t work for 128, but
with such a text size, problems arise such as deletion, insertion and the like
although you can try to do it at 128, but the text will be short since the
pages contain procedures for scrolling and the like already at the moment
3 pages are jam-packed...
I would preferably need help with a fast printer, since I have 80 characters
printed in as much as half a frame, how to do it faster for some reason I don’t have enough brains and
everything is in an expanded form.
I will also need help from the owners of the printer, due to the lack of one
there is no way I can make a print...
Scrolling the entire screen managed to be done in only 106 thousand cycles, but with
page leafing everything will be much slower due to the reason described above,
about 13 frames.
those who want to take part in this project, write in soap online, since I'm hanging out
on flopinet and haven't been reading very often lately, and I don't have enough time :( to read them, but I always read soap, even though sometimes I'm slow with
answers

[...yum...]
1. Will there be a mouse? ;)
2. If the text is "keel at 300", then as I understand it, this is not for 256k computers, so
at least 512? This is good, even very good, but will it really cost the editor as much as 212k? 8[ ], just Winword 7.0 “in miniature” ;)
3. What does All think about storing text as a doubly linked list? That is,
each element of the list contains not only a line, but also a pointer to the next
and to the previous line. Imho for such sizes this is very important, because
operations with text will be instantaneous without any brakes, only when the moment comes
that there is nowhere to place the entire line, you will have to do the so-called “compaction” of the text (and this will be quite rare)
(compaction is of course caused automatically bylack of space, imho for 300k
it will be a couple of seconds)
4. Under 128k, in principle, this is also possible, only there will be much fewer pages for text ;) (after all, you can work with memory through the driver)
5. A “correct” transfer of words would not hurt... (as in is-dos)
6. Well, in general, you can learn a lot of useful things (about functions) if you study some standard text editor for PC (for example, the editor in BP7.0)
;)

This is where you’re wrong, guy, where did you see a text editor with such
resolution on the spec? And if you add another 128 characters per line, then at all it's a blunder, for example, you have a diagram drawn 80 characters wide, then how would you like to see it better? Torn into 2 or entirely?

So you don’t care, you’re sitting under the emulator anymore...
Moreover, 128 is morally outdated like 48, think about how people now
have to be distorted in order to fit everything in 128 memory?
Demos are constantly being counted (not all of them, of course), and the like...
And why do you need to do it under 128, and not under 512, slaves already It's been a long time since everyone learned to
use a soldering iron and finish up to 512, why did others do it?

Nope, don’t crash, I just roughly said that... And then suddenly you want to add something else, well, for example, text shifting or sliding, I
still haven’t really understood how to organize text with links, or rather
I understand, but then there will be a ton of these links dark, as much as 3 bytes per line, then
with such a scale, a text 13000 lines long will waste another plus

Why cling to words so much? The logic is different for each person, if
a person strives to improve his computer, then this does not mean that he
is going to throw away the Spectrum, but it turns out that the further he wants
to advance the Spectrum, then therefore he wants to throw it away?

If you don’t have access to ZXNET, you can probably do it here...
I think that you need a printer for lines of 85 characters and separately letter-by-letter.

I can do it myself, but I don’t want to...Sit with a soldering iron and hack away at a poor computer for the sake of 2-5
programs? Nope.
Let's say a coder, for example, wants 512 because alasm or ksas
supports it, and he uses it almost all the time. But as a muzaker or
fixer, I don’t need it at all. So if you make a program, then it should be a universal one.
It’s another matter if you’re just doing it just for yourself... in this case, at least you can sculpt under
16k specs.
But it seems to me that most programs on the Spectrum are written exactly like that, and

Under what? Under the text? IMHO 60-70Kb for the Spectrum _editor_ -
pretty good. Moreover, taking into account the restrictions on the size of the tr-dos file.
Yes, by the way, can you imagine how quickly such text will be processed
(formatted, edited, searched, etc.)? Let's say
you are going to insert the contents of the edit buffer at the very beginning of
200 KB of text. Or more precisely, you add a new line, which
will be the first in the text. How long will it take for the required separation to occur? And
considering that the text is on the pages? For example, I managed to achieve
only the same speed as in ZX-WinWord v2.2

There is no need to exaggerate my words. you might think that you are an enemy of the Spectrum? why freeze the platform, or rather, what's left of it? While Spectrum can
develop, it must do so. the time has come for 512K (I’m not saying 256, which
would be more expedient, since 512K in 128 cars is easier to do)
I read in ZF, issue 6, like (or 7?), how Slavik suffered when he wrote the CV? I would have done it at 256K... mmm... although this is a double-edged sword - there would be fewer buyers. but how many people would finally expand their memory in order
to gamble in CV!

I don't argue for trdos ZXWord is the most, the most. but is-edit is a complete blast. true
at maximum speck acceleration. I did this: 1. to work in isdos
I use a RAM disk with port #7FFD, since it is faster to manage computer memory
from it, 2. the 7 MHz turbo mode has a very good effect on the speed of
the system. the frame contains all the necessary system files, is-edit and is-print, and
there are still 220-230 kilobytes left for other needs (for a 384K frame disk). everything
works quickly, the brakes in the editor are felt only in block operations with
a load of more than 60 - 70 kg.

You’re wrong to think so, if I take on something necessary, I’ll try to finish it,
the probability of not finishing it is only 5%, and that’s only if I die.
Games are another matter, as for me they don’t need much, at the same time, in parallel with the

AN> I’m exaggerating. :). it means that others don’t need it, you can’t expand

I can actually make and sell this editor, otherwise it will be frivolous
!!!
The Spectrum is already bent, and you here don’t have 512 keel, so not everyone has it, so
everything needs to be done at 128, I’ll give a damn about this opinion !!!
I’m in general! this editor was planning to do this for himself and for his friends online!!!
By the way, regarding 512 keel, in our city I know only 5 spektrumists, and 3
of them have 512 keel of memory, our muzakers only have 128 each, more like one of them
says why don’t you need it, well, why don’t you take the flag into his hands
If you don’t want to expand, don’t!!!
Sit and type texts on ZX-Word and ruin your eyesight

Believe me, even if it slows down, it will be very rarely, because of this doubly linked
list, which is all over YV, all problems are solved as long as there is memory
it won’t slow down _ABSO_, then when the memory runs out, it won’t slow down for
a long time, a little longer than yours, the text was pulled up, the memory was freed, and again
whole hours of flights were not in a dream, but in reality!!!
AN>>> sir. Although on the other hand, why the hell do we need another editor...? ;(
VB>> This is where you are wrong, guy, where did you see a text editor with

EM> And where did you see that such a resolution would already become standard?
Well, damn it, then, that 512 keel is also not standard? Or maybe because
there was no AY on 48, then on 128 is also not standard?
In my opinion, everything new that flows into our lives becomes standard ;)

Forget it, this method is no longer needed, I’ll implement it in the form of a doubly connected speech
AN> Tell me more, otherwise I’m already starting to think badly about your editor.
AN> ;)
You can think as you want, I don’t care, but it will be spared from the brakes, since
sliding and sliding the text won’t take any time at all, unless it’s like this
per beat 4 more, if not less ;)

2. Editing the buffer, the cursor is stuck
3. Soon I’ll move on to editing the text itself, when I’ll write the editor to

I’ll post Yahoo, and so all you have to do is wait, on the day according to the procedure and so
we’ll end up in a fool ;))

Well, write what capabilities it has, I won’t see it saw.
2ALL: let's discuss design problems and everything else, I think I only have 2
problems left:
1. Design
2. Word wrapping
So there are also such proposals: to make work with MS-DOS disks, whoever writes
a program to work with them, I am a complete 0 in working with VG93 and in general with the fatty MS-DOS
disks, I just somehow didn’t have to, 3d13 was always enough...
Just take into account fragmentation, directories and the like.

AN> I can’t imagine a doubly linked list. :( Bay further...
AN> More details...
AN> That is, we have a list that contains the lines themselves and links to each
AN> next element of the list. Is this the first connection? And what is the second connection with what?
AN> Or am I
AN> in the wrong steppe? :)
In short, here is the future format of the line:
len prv nxt string
len - line length
prv - address the beginning of the previous line
nxt - the address of the beginning of the next line
string - the line itself without #0d0a
And thanks to such a doubly linked list, the text in memory will be stored in any order, and every time a line is inserted, there is no need to move the text apart, but simply put a link to the end of the text, and add
it there, and when the memory runs out, just this text then you tighten it up,
no problems, the tightening will happen very rarely, and when you delete
it’s the same, just the links of the lines before and after are changed and that’s it.

by the way, the isdos editor has a buffer of only one line and at the same time
works at 48k with texts of any length.

Don’t worry, it was the same at my school. :) It was when I was in college that I started to get my head around it... It didn’t stop me from writing a text editor and a word wrapping block. :)
