ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»

From Max Lekomcev To All 31 July 1999

How are you, All?

My friend is going to write a subject similar to Win95, but unfortunately
does not have access to FIDO :( and therefore wants to conduct a survey among
the population whether anyone needs this program. ;)
Characteristics:
- Will be hardcoded in an additional ROM
- Will be called via NMI
- Requires 512Kb or more up to 4MB of memory and a Profi computer
- will use a CP/M screen
- Multitasking according to the principle: the more memory
the more tasks

Best regards, Le'MAX/PoS.

It’s high time to write something like this on Profyak!!! Go ahead, write, if
you need anything, I’ll try to help.

Sincerely, Musa Khaybullin.

From Artur Ishmurzin To All 3 August 1999

Greetings, fellow Sinclairists!

many of you, I think, remember a certain OS/shell called Pink Floyd.
whoever finds it difficult, let me remind you that it was an attempt to implement
pseudo-multitasking, an html browser. It seems to me that she interested many people at the moment of her appearance. and I will not be original if I say that most of you have experienced a feeling of deep disappointment due to the glitches
and unfinished nature of this product. time has passed... now we have a real
opportunity to get a normal and extended version of this program. so
let's think seriously and give an answer whether a shell program of this
type is needed on the Spectrum.
please answer everyone who writes/reads here. It wouldn’t hurt to write a couple
lines.

2skeptics/critics: don’t rush with kicks and screams. It’s better to think again.
maybe you shouldn’t ruin a good project.

Best wishes, Artur. [ZX]

1. How real is this “opportunity”? Will it be completed? Will
will it be supported by the authors in the future?
If not, then don’t.
2. Is it even technically possible to do everything that was stated in the advertisement?
(I don’t even remember everything that was promised there. :)
3. Initially, it was planned as a purely commercial event. If this is exactly the case, then it will not become widespread enough, and the authors of software on Spec
love mass systems.
Or the authors of the system will have to order software from programmers, which they will then
implement themselves... :-/

All the best.
Best regards, Roman.

well, what will you answer the question about the need for a subject? only, I repeat, not what it was, but a normal, modified and expanded version.

You don’t understand. This is not for Spec, but for Pros. :)

Why bother a person? Let him do it. At least he will gain experience. After all, we are not talking about: either “Pro-Windows” or HeOS...

I didn’t answer your question only because I didn’t know what to say. :) I
in general think that the conversation about multitasking on the spec is not serious.

AI> only, I repeat, not the one that was, but the normal, modified and
AI> extended version.

I didn’t really see that one either. There was no interest in even looking. Sorry.

From Sergei Dubarev To All 7 August 1999

Well, let him make a KDE clone for the spec (with Linux into the bargain) :))) It will make you
less sick :)

in order.
a) as real as possible. This is why this conversation has been started - if the people support it, if they need it..
b) “the ways of God are inscrutable” (c)..., but there is an author’s desire,
possibility.
c) see b)

RM> 2. Is it even technically possible to do everything that was

:) As far as I remember, there was a lot written in the advertisement (if we are talking about
ZF #??) I’ll go re-read the article :)

IMHO, on the Spectrum, non-game software cannot be purely commercial. example
- isdos.

it’s buggy... there’s not much software for it and it’s not at all cool at all :)

IMHO: it’s not worth wasting energy and TIME on it.

Similarly. Perhaps in her echo, to get an impression of the subject. Again,
there would be something to discuss.

RM> You don't understand. This is not for Spec, but for Pro. :)

Sorry, then, but in my opinion it’s in vain that you’re pros (I’m so bent ;) that you’re separating yourself.
Everyone is shouting about widespread non-standards, but they themselves are creating a bunch of systems and everything
other things.

Sincerely, Dmitry.

VP> Why bother a person? Let him do it. At least
VP> will gain experience. After all, we are not talking about either “Profi-Windows” or HeOS...

Yes, in principle there is nothing bad. They're just scattering all their strength :(. If they took
"...the whole world, all the people..." they would lean on the operating system - look, it
would have been working for everyone for a long time and it would be fine.

Sincerely, Dmitry.

AI> b) “the ways of God are inscrutable” (c)..., but there is an author’s desire,

And there are statistics about the creation of software on Speck. The “desire” is there today, but tomorrow, more often than not, it’s gone... :(
Isn’t it better for the whole world to take up NeOS? The authors could really collaborate in
creating version 2.*, which seems to be designed to be multitasking.

If you throw it here, they will hang me :). There will be a whole TRD guy there. You can also
by file in the archive, which will also work out a lot. so what should I do? maybe in
zx.spectrum?

From Eugene Tyukaev To All 15 August 1999

AI> this is subjective and non-specific. give us your claims and suggestions.
the claims are a glitch upon a glitch!!
namely, the incorrect definition of 512kb by the Pentagon
the TR-DOS programs are poorly adapted for it, namely, the transition from some
to the OS only when exiting them!! what kind of OS is this? :)
more glitches - when hiding a window, some pieces of windows remain, etc. (I, of course
understand that remembering the background eats up a lot of space, but still it would be possible
to redraw the windows - for that matter)

well, as for the proposals, they are hidden in my claims, otherwise I am
_categorically_ _against_ the _continuation_ of this OS! IMHO it is better to write from the very
beginning and with an open architecture a la *nix :) (I'm serious)

AI> ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ the laurels of Linux do not give you peace? ;)

I have a very vague idea of what Linux is and what laurels it has.

From Roman Milukov To All 18 August 1999

ET> I’ll say this: this OS came to me and others in my region quite
ET> after a long period of time since the release of this version (I don’t remember which one)

Yeah. And it’s the same with us. They wanted to make money from it right away. And this is a double-edged sword - on the one hand it is useful, there is support for the authors, there is a desire
to develop, but on the other hand it greatly slows down the spread. This is not
Black
Raven, you still need to convince people that they need it.

ET> How much did I understand my html there? It would be better to bring him back to normal.

Ozh. On Spec, everything is “not like people’s”. There is still no normal ZIP either. :(

From Artur Ishmurzin To All 19 August 1999

ET> claims - a glitch on a glitch!!
ET> namely - incorrect determination of 512kb by the Pentagon

but for me it is determined correctly, finds 512k by #7FFD, works with it normally,
but writes that the OS found Scorpio 256k :)) after a little fiddling with the driver
it went under #DFFD at the Pentagon.

ET> TR-DOS programs are poorly adapted to it, namely, the transition from
ET> some to the OS only when exiting them!! what kind of OS is this
ET> no :)

it was written in the help - “incomplete adaptation, in the next version everything will be
ok”

ET> more glitches - when hiding a window, some pieces of windows remain
ET>, etc. (I of course understand that remembering the background eats up a lot
ET> of space, but it was still possible I would also like to redraw the windows - since it’s on

everything is correct here, there is nothing to object to.

I would also like to add, if no one noticed this. in turbo mode it works
unstable. It hangs often, it's an infection :)

ET> Well, as for the proposals, they are hidden in my claims, otherwise

Are you hinting at neos? :). so one does not interfere with the other. or play big - adapt Pink Floyd tono...
