NeOS

ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»

From Roman Petrov To All 20 March 1999

Hello, All!

With the permission of the moderator and at the request of readers, I am uploading 3 versions of NeOS firmware: for regular 128's, for Scorpios (for loading into RAM!) and for Pentagon-512.

If you have a cache, but without the ability to replace the ROM with it, then look at these firmwares you won't succeed in the cache :( To run the Scorpio firmware, you need to load it into the zero page of RAM, issue 1 to port #1ffd and then jp 0.

The firmware contains the following drivers:
character output (64 characters per line), keyboard :-), driver floppy drive, CMOS driver (according to the Gluck scheme), TR-DOS driver (written in full), iS-DOS 640K driver (byte reading/writing functions are not added, everything else works).

If you find glitches, please report them, otherwise last time there was a very glitchy firmware here ;-) Many glitches corrected.

PS: Tomorrow we will send updated documentation and a picture with an approximate appearance of NeOS commander.

Bye, All! Megus/Brainwave.

Subject :(

As I understand it, for Scorp it is neos_256.rom? I pushed it into ram0, out (#1ffd), 1
then jp 0 - a menu comes out (NeOS, Basic128, etc);
Well, the output in B128, TR128 doesn’t work, that’s probably how it was intended.

But if you select NeOS - information is displayed about the computer (Scorpion...),
the availability of memory (192kb), free memory (190kb), then the picture in some places
(#4000-#5800) is clogged with dirty tricks and the computer freezes.

So the question is, does anyone experience something similar? Or is it because
I have, for example, ProfPzu (3.9f), or smuc, or smuc? it was just a glitch and
I should stop my mental torment ;)

So it needs to be in the ROM! And if the jar is 0, then it will work for a while and fail.

On Scorpakh - yes, that’s how it was intended. It works for everyone else. On Scorpakh, simply
from ROM, replaced by RAM, calling TR-DOS is difficult.

If you’re talking about the neos_256.rom firmware, then it needs to be in page 0 (the first
version, which I uploaded with the others, had a bug, Yesterday I threw the corrected one), and all the rest really need to be in the ROM, or in the cache with a ROM replacement.

PS: I ask everyone who is willing and able to test the functions of the NeOS kernel, read the documentation and

No, no I like it, there is a lot of unnecessary stuff in the kernel, and it takes up 1/4
of the address space of the processor! This is something like a BIOS.
But it was possible to provide the so-called in the addresses ff00...ffff. gateway for transition
to BIOS, and leave the rest of the address space for RAM. You can, of course
write your own OS, motivating this by the fact that everything else is old and outdated, you can
fundamentally make it incompatible with anything, etc... But why is it needed and
what programs will work there? I understand if there is transparent
support for any file systems (TR-DOS (but there are difficulties), IS-DOS,
MS-DOS, CP/M), emulation of various operating systems TR-DOS, IS-DOS, CP/M
etc. But when this is not the case, and instead there are little understood functions for working with graphics, which will not be in demand in any program because
these small programs are most often not called from the computer. from where, and
are placed directly in the code to speed up work.
And finally, why does everyone have such a persistent aversion to CP/M? It exists and
it works, there are really useful onesprograms (which you can count on your fingers). But this is really an OPERATING SYSTEM, and not a piece of BASIC called TR-DOS. Nothing good can be said at all
about isdos - what kind of programs can you write if there is no way to allocate more than 8kb of contiguous memory
? (I did not take into account the memory in the banks.)
My point is that there should be CP/M support at the BDOS level and no
ROMs. Why invent your own file system when there is MS-DOS? After all,
it is impossible to catch all its shortcomings at once, but there is something that has already been recognized as a standard and
has existed for many years. Finally, the libraries for C
must be redesigned to support this new OS, or as always, you can use the buggy ALASM,
XAS, STORM, TASM etc?
Why copy existing errors? After all, neither IS-DOS nor TR-DOS is able to ensure the operation of many programs; it is simply impossible to make them work on these OS. And I don’t mean their specific implementations, all the problems
are only in the idiotic limitations of these OSs.

But you don’t have to look far for examples of how bad everything is: I hope no one
will argue that on Spectrum there is practically no software for working in fidonet,
and there is absolutely no software for organizing FTN networks on the Spectrum! Yes, if
is not yet clear, then it’s worth looking at SPBZXNET! Yes, the worst thing is not that something is missing. And the fact is thatTHIS WILL NEVER BE ON THE SPECTRUM
in the form in which it is now. And connecting at least
128 Mb of memory or a new super-general sound will not help here. This is all needed only for
toys, but if you want to play with toys, then PC, AMIGA or game consoles are much better suited for this. It is impossible to write programs
that process mail in TR-DOS. It is impossible to do this in IS-DOS (although
you can already try). 90% OF PROBLEMS ARE SOLELY RELATED TO THE OPERATING SYSTEM OF THE SPECTRUM. The remaining 10% is the absence of a drive with a capacity
of more than 20Mb with the possibility of simultaneous access to all information,
a completely ill-thought-out organization of memory and the LACK OF A NORMAL
80x25 SCREEN (and one that does not require much time for its servicing by the processor).

Draw conclusions it is necessary to appropriately improve... And then here you can see letters where
it is written that demos are needed, din... Well, emulator people write this, they just don’t
understand why anything else is needed on the Spectrum.

But does everyone have a good idea of what a huge role ZXNET and in general
networks on the Spectrum have in why the Spectrum is not yet sent to the landfill?
Yes, it’s just worth calculating how many people would have thrown out or sold their
spectrums if they had not learned about networks on the spectrum at one time?

SPBZXNET now does not function at all, or rather only that part
of the network whichexisted with its own cunning mail format (everyone got fed up with stupid ones)
and worked not on a PC, BUT ON SPECTRUMS. And all the problems are due to the complete
lack of software and hardware. The general sound and the new super game for it do not in any way contribute to the transmission of mail. They can’t make software, and if they do somewhere
it’s of no use. Take for example DICKIE and LARA - what's the point
of them if they run on different OSes? Further development of all kinds of editors
and tossers under TR-DOS is generally unpromising, I hope there is no need to explain
why. But none of the program authors thought about CREATING PROGRAMS
INDEPENDENT OF THE OS or generally MACHINE INDEPENDENT. They know their favorite
TR-DOS with turboloaders and believe that nothing can be better. :-(

However, any appeals here are useless, nothing will help,
emulators will win :-(

NeOS is also an operating system and takes into account all the features of the standard
Spectrum. If you have 64 kilos of continuous memory, use CP/M. And on a 128
machine? However, I'm repeating myself.

Although you still remain a real Spectrumist, like me too. you want Specky to live, and I want that. Only we have different paths. CP/M is a system not written specifically for the Spectrum, but in general for the Z80. That’s the difference between them.

Why be so pessimistic. If only emulators remain, the platform will die,
it will remain only in memories, but no one will revive it. Who

Spectrumists play a huge role for the Spectrum, that is, those people who
write software or buy it from the authors, the same applies to hardware and
everything like that. That is, those who act for the benefit of the platform. Those who
simply possess the Spectrum, but do not bring any benefit to the platform, that is, simply
the owners of the Spectrum. The number of the latter does not change anything, not for the better, not for the worse, despite the decrease in their number, or

there will already be at least some kind of software. _EVERYTHING_ must be written! I’ll take charge of the commander :-) Everything

I repeat, if the owner of Spectrum buys software, writes it, and does something
other useful for the platform, he is a Spectrumist. If it doesn't do anything useful, it's just the owner of the Spectrum, and nothing more. Such people can be called both those who have the Spectrum lying on the shelf, and those who do something behind it, even 24 hours a day, but what they do does not bring any benefit to the platform. For example, he sits in Fido and writes messages.

KM> If there are not enough “just Spectrum owners”, then who will install new
KM> hardware
KM> and buy software?

The Spectrum owner doesn’t buy anything. Or he buys it in this way
only because it doesn’t benefit the platform. For example, he buys pirated software cheaply or downloads it online for free. The same applies to iron. If he bought his Spectrum from the same owner for a bottle of beer, then how will this help the platform, and what will it improve? The Spectrumist
also has a Spectrum (although the latter is not even necessary), but his
actions lead to an improvement in the situation on the platform, and he is concerned about the fate of the
platform, andetc.

KM> What is the benefit to you from the grid - the same for Spectrumists.

I'm not talking about the benefit to me or the Spectrumists of the grid, I'm talking about the benefit
Spectrumists or owners for the Spectrum platform. These are different things,
totally different.

Don’t pretend that you can’t read. Firstly, it is written in Russian that:
A Spectrumist does something useful for the platform, and what is useful to the platform
every Spectrumist knows. Secondly, for example, the CV sold by me
Spectrumists buy not from me but from Slava, but with my help. Just like
Mirror and Operation P.P. they buy not from me, but from St. Petersburg
distributors, again with my help. I'll try to explain how help is expressed. The place in the market where I stand for the day costs ~250 rubles. Now figure out how much you need to sell, for example, a private company, in order to recoup the place. Then, if you think about it, you will find out what my help means. Who do you think the rest are, you

You have “classified” everyone! :)
How do you measure the benefit of the platform? In rubles (cu)? In kilobytes?
Well, there is CV, Mirror, GeneralSound... (Although I somewhat doubt the usefulness of the latter for the "platform" as a whole, but this is IMHO.)
But tell me about frivolous software (and hardware developments). After all, it is being created specifically for _all_ Spectrum owners. What are the goals?

Or how do you know if the Spectrum owner cares about the fate of the platform? IMHO if
he tinkers with Speck, devotes personal time to him - this is already a Spectrumist, and he
necessarily, by definition, should be concerned about the fate of the platform.

And supporting authors is a matter of morality, and,Naturally, very useful for the
platform. But this is not only a Spectrum problem - it’s like this everywhere.

In particular, because of the editor. I immediately remember someone’s letter in which
the author said that (sitting on the PC) he never uses built-in
editors and always types all texts in DH. Laughter, and that's all. I can't imagine serious work without a fast and convenient interface. This is 90% of the success of a future program (just don’t exaggerate and take the idea to the point of insanity ;)).

Dark Dragon Station, I hope you know? ;-) It's called CPM_SRC.ZIP

Only it is in source form and for PENTAGON. But for a scorpion it’s not difficult
to redo it. There, in 512x192, the terminal is advanced - compatible with PROFI
(partially) and has a bunch of different character encodings, switches like

Creation for everyone is the goal. This only says that the author

opportunities) that he does it for free.

You can tinker with the Spectrum, for example, and have nothing better to do. Simple, and
he may not care about the platform for this. You can tell by his actions.
If the platform cares, a person will do something useful for it

You see, Kirill, if NeOS emulates is-dos restarts, then why
call it NeOS? It will just turn out to be an ordinary is-dos, well perhaps an accelerated version. And this new system will make no sense.

You don’t understand. It should only emulate, for example, levels 1,2,3...
and revise level 0 altogether. The point is to work in isdos
directly with MS-DOS disks. There are useful programs in isdos, but the system itself is [censored]. There it is difficult to work with files longer than
85 blocks.

It seems that you find out about some thread and start
criticizing it... 85 blocks is a lot. Naturally, if the blocks are not equal to 256
bytes. ;)

And with files _longer_ than 85 blocks in IS-DOS it is not difficult, but simply
impossible. ;)

From Roman Petrov To All 1 May 1999

KF> You don't understand. It should only emulate, for example, levels 1,2,3...
Listen, if you need to emulate _only_ restarts, then this can be done. I
RST #10 is free, whatever you want, hang it on it. And if you hang an emulator of iS-DOS functions on it, then, in theory, you can run iS-DOS programs.
If you need anything else, then let me know. Yes, is it possible to load programs below #5E00 in iS-DOS? After all, #5E00 will be free for me if the main variables (which are accessed in
IY) are dragged to another area.

When actively working with a file, the segment length tends to 256 bytes.
And in isdos, the concept of BLOCK means just 256 bytes.

That's what I'm talking about. You need a FAT, or a segment descriptor that is not 256 bytes,
but infinite.
