And only 4 bits, which would be implemented by one counter.

I once thought about implementing a wheel on a Kempston mouse, which
would immediately work without drivers with most software on the spec and the only
solution, in my opinion, is to, using 2 unoccupied bits
in the button port, trigger wheel rotation events on the Q and A buttons - which
are very often used for paging, for example, magazines. This is quite easy to implement in hardware. Well, developing the idea, set the second wheel
to O and P, the fourth and fifth buttons to anything (although there may not be enough free bits :)
I once saw somewhere a circuit that itself presses RANDOMIZE USR 15616,
so the field for experiments is huge.
regards
Oleg

Insanity grew stronger...

The fool himself. It's a good idea, but IMHO it won't go forward. Although what the hell is not joking.

It’s natural not to solder to the buttons, as someone might think ;)
Well, just imagine, let’s say you’re on the beach. We took with us a good
mouse with two wheels and five buttons (and a trackball under the thumb ;)
When suddenly... you got tired of playing MANIC MINER and you easily and UNFORCEDLY
press the fourth mouse button, after which the logic hanging on it
does the following: RESET -> RANDOMIZE USR 15616 -> ENTER -> RUN -> ENTER,
after which BOOT naturally appears on the screen (so beautiful, with
music), but AAAAAAAAAABLOOOOM!!! BOOT is not friendly with KEMPSTON MOUSE !!!
Hence the conclusion - we begin to spin the mouse wheels, which are set to QAOP,
and, moving the cursor to the desired file, press the middle (or 5th) button
of the mouse, which is set to the spacebar - and that's it! TELEMARKET!
(Someone may shout that you can’t touch the middle button, because it
will be NESPECTRUM ;) then you can answer him that just for the sake of supporting it
in CV2 and UFO2, you can make such a sacrifice)

Everything is incredibly cool, BUT
this is the ideologically wrong way.
We need to fix it, but it’s better to immediately write the software correctly, and not then produce something like this
deformity.

Yeah, let's, comrades, take STS's in our hands and with a song shovel all the
software under the mouse's wheels :))))
A good example is General Sound. The hardware is good, but there is something not enough
enthusiasm (many of ours died/scrapped up?) when adapting the software.
So let’s not teach the wise ALL which path is correct.
If a person’s legs do not grow from the neck (and the arms do not come from (_)(_)) then he will
decide how viable this idea is.

You can’t beat all the women.. you can’t fix all the software! ;-)))
