Every self-respecting spektrumist wants to have a Pentagon

Hi *Nikolay*!
And it all started on 08-Jun-00 at 03:39:34, when Nikolay Tolstikh
talked with Yuri Voynalovich about Re: Every self-respecting spektrumist

Hehe, that’s definitely long overdue ;)

I don’t know, of course, how common Synthesis and Lenin are, but I hope it will help in some way..

Subj : Evil grater about how I remade LENINGRAD1 into PENTAGON
==========================================================================YOUWROTE=
Hi *All*!
--------------------------------------------------------
So, despite the malicious statements of theorists that they say it is impossible to so easily remake Lenin intofull-fledged Penyok, I still
throw information about how I _practically_ converted my ill-fated
Leningrad into the Pentagon. Please do not attribute this message to the recently passed April 1 - everything is completely serious!
I hasten to assure you that this whole thing still works great for me,
and not only for me, but for almost the entire Ukrainian division
Phantasy (I am Combinator/PH7 2:4621/10.7 2:4621/14.15;
Noize/PH7 2:4621/10.2; Envoy/PH7 2:4621/10.55)
And it was around 1997, when I was completely fed up with the fact that almost all the demos were written for the Pentagon and on my "Leninist" everything
often maliciously slowed down, and at the most interesting place it reset or froze. A normal psyche, in theory, should not withstand this state of affairs for a long time, and therefore such spektrumists soon faced the question: WHAT TO DO??? Immediately they started annoyingly
swarming in thoughts:
- shouldn’t we paint this whole thing green and throw it in
the trash bin, having first told the address of the trash bin to a fellow Spectrumist and
switch to an Amiga or a Spectrum yourself?
- maybe don’t watch the demos after all - let them all get crushed there?
- or maybe buy a normal Pentagon and feel normal
a white man in my beloved Spectrum world?!
But for a number of reasons, all these points disappeared for me, and II decided to fight on my own, so as not to be like the “fat and glossy bourgeois” ;) - after all, our people usually don’t have bucks and kilobucks.
The first attempts to increase the number of clock cycles in the frame were
attempts to change the initial value of the counters D3, D4, D5, which originated during the persistent experiments of Point777 with his “Lenin”. Of course, there were more cycles, but this was still not enough for some demos,
and then it turned out that for many effects exactly 71680 cycles were needed (as in the Pentagon) and no more and no less (not to mention multicolors). As everyone knows, for full-fledged work dem need a Pentagon scan, i.e. 320 lines of 224 bars each, all this
should work evenly, i.e. without WAIT loops and in addition to this there must be a Pentagon INT, i.e. arriving by the signal of a personnel sync pulse. It is also worth mentioning that there is a small group of
effects that require, in addition to everything else, Pentagon
sampling of border color changes, i.e. 2 pixels each, and not 8,
as in Leningrad (RAGE, hidden part of INSULT, etc), but this is no longer so
fundamentally, since it more or less works and requires
cutting a bunch of paths in Leninets (I actually did it myself -
it turned out to be a rulez ;) )
But let's get back to our deer ;), soDid I actually do such a thing that I got all the multicolors and other outrageously pleasant perversions working for me? ;) I’ll even note that as a result, my computer turned out to be more compatible with the Pentagon than the Pentagon itself ;) -
for example, the unfixed version of KolobokZoom2 works great for me and
doesn’t freeze after game over..
So, in order:
1. First, you need to completely get rid of the WAIT signal, which arrives at the 24 leg of the Z80 and slows down the entire computer. As trivial as it may seem, this
turned out to be simple by cutting off WAIT from the processor and feeding the Z80 log to the 24
leg. units (“1” is a logical unit, i.e. you just need to apply
+5V through a resistor of several kilo-ohms, or at worst, just
apply +5V) But then it turned out that this does not work for everyone.
As a result, it was found that without WAIT the computer becomes more
critical to the quality of the RAM. That is, to successfully trim WAIT you need
to have normal RAM, but do not be alarmed - problems were
noticed only on individual copies of RU5 (and this, you see,
is archaic). All the RU7 and their analogues that I have encountered, and even more so
SIMM modules, worked perfectly without WAIT, so this point
of rework should not be a problem. It should be noted that on
all converted Leningrads we have quartz at 14.00 MHz with
the correspondinginstallations on D4 (according to the Leningrad scheme). In general,
the first thing is to cut WAIT.
2. From the 9th leg of D5 we cut off the /BK signal and supply ground instead (to 9D5).
That's it! After this point and the successful completion of the first, all tests
should show the same number of clock cycles as on the Pentagon
(i.e. 71680+ test_error). At least there are no more brakes
.
3. Now let's move on to adjusting the INT signal coming to the 16th
leg of the Z80. Having made this modification, you can also put the
switch on the old INT, since there are some things that “blink” on the
Pentagon INT (but IMHO, why the need - after all, even scorpions are already mowing down
for the Pentagon INT and makeshift).
First you need to assemble a traditional scheme for converting the native
“Leninist” INT, for example the VAV scheme:
"1"<──┬────┐
│ │
56k█ ___ KD522
█ / \
n91 │ │
KS ───┤├───┼────┴───> on the 16th leg Z80 (INT)
│
█ n10
█
│
┴
But the KS signal (frame sync pulse) apply to this circuit through
delay circuit:
555ЛH1
1K2 1┌──┐2 3┌──┐4
KS ──████───┬───┤1 ╞───┤1 ╞─────> to the INT scheme (instead of KS)
6н8 │ └──┘└──┘
┌──┤├─┘
┴
Then cut off from 5D5 /BS, and instead (to 5D5) send a signal
from 6D8. For each specific "assembly" a slight
adjustment of resistor values may be required - you can easily test
for example using RamDoctor, Test4.2x, etc. or more precisely with
the help of End Part of RAGE ;)
Yes, by the way, after these manipulations the last character in
each line can disappear - this can be treated with the help of a conduit (~6n8) thrown from
6D13 (BORDER) to the ground.
So, that seems to be all. Now you can enjoy a full viewing of dem
on _Leningrad1_! Those who haven't seen normal multicolors on their zx
have lost quite a lot (what are the works of Real Masters worth!).
Good luck!
