There is no point. With the restrictions that are imposed on the RAR archive in order
to be unpacked on the Spectrum, the compression in the ZIP archive turns out to be no worse.

In any case, even with those restrictions, the RAR archive turns out to be smaller
in size than in the ZIP. Besides, what kind of restrictions are there? Well, besides the fact that the archive
versions from 1.3 to 2.9 are not multimedia compression and not multi-volume, I don’t know any more
restrictions. Even SOLID is supported...
In short, pack with the default parameters and everything will be OK.

NA> In any case, even with those restrictions, the archive in the PAP is

How much smaller? That's the question. 10% here and there doesn't change anything. But
it takes longer to unpack, not everyone and not everywhere has this unrar, etc... If
it compressed twice as well, that would be a different matter. Otherwise there is no point.

will rar -mdE -m5 unpack? You need about a megabyte of memory, but where does so much come from on the Spectrum? In swap?
Compare at your leisure zip with maximum compression and rar with default compression...

From Tim Kelly To All 5 March 2003

IK> No, well, I’m not dumber than a locomotive, I’ll throw two different archives into real life,

You won’t throw it. Such volumes are not for this echo.
By the way, you need to read the rules. At least sometimes.

Au revoir.

Compare - the result is not in favor of ZIP (10% archive longer).

We have nodes where PAP is used exclusively. I once had a problem with this.

“almost everyone” - what percentage??

I, for example, know only one person who has 3 RAR - and then
he works as a system administrator in an Internet cafe (he doesn’t care what_ to set).

Of the people I know, more than 95% use version 3.
Even fidomail, more than half of those who have RAR are packaged with version 3.

He just doesn’t care. He wants to compress data more strongly and save space.
And keep up with progress.

Let's say a 640kb disk is sent. What do you like more, extra 64kb or
problems when unpacking a file? (on PC the problem is not like that) Although
there is a certain meaning in rar - this way bugs in unrar will be caught faster.

yes, don't be ridiculous, there are
not so many strange fanatical adherents of the old rar left, and by and large you have already started to climb into the offtopic here, so
let's tie up the rarity here.

well, it was not for nothing that Zadornov said that Americans all over the world behave the same
as Muscovites do in Russia :-)))

the world does not end in Moscow :-)

IT> yes, don’t be ridiculous, there aren’t many strange fanatical adherents of the old rar
IT> left,

hmm, where was the mention of “fanaticalism”? and regarding new versions - right now
I’ll run to change the software everywhere. All this is idiocy. The new versions of PAR
are not so well packaged compared to the previous ones that you immediately need to change the software.

that's it, we're done with the topic. those who disagree are eliminated.

NA> In any case, even with those restrictions, the archive in the PAP is
NA> smaller in size than in the ZIP. Besides, what kind of restrictions are there? Well
NA> besides the fact that the archive is from 1.3 to 2.9,
you just can’t trust winrar programs, they know a couple more methods that
I don’t know ;) but winrar v2.5 seems to pack compatible.
NA> not multimedia compression
NA> and not multi-volume, I don’t know any more restrictions. Even SOLID
NA> is supported...
now SOLID can be used only if: a) the dictionary size is less than the
memory size; or b) the files have round lengths in sectors!!!

due to b) but you can unpack solid archives of TRD people - dump them on top of each other on one disk :)

but in v0.41 (the first version without errors in the unpacker) the
Scorpion mode does not work, so I did not upload it here, and in Inferno there will be v0.42, then
let's talk :)

about the speed: if you don’t count the cache (which is supported in unzip and not yet
supported in unrar) and swap (I believe that the comrades going to Fido have at least
256k! and then there will be no swap on files of a reasonable size), the current versions of unrar are 15% faster than the current versions of unzip. Here. I saw the source of unzip and
I know why :)

unrar clumsily supports unpacking from several disks and is simply disgusting
for unpacking across several disks. in unzip everything is ok.
unpackingtrdshnik on the same disk is not supported correctly by either one or the other
(it is required to place the archive close to the end of the disk).
Unrar also does not know how to test the crc of a file. (but crc is testing headers)
here is the situation for today.

2Tigrr: by the way, unzip can be accelerated to the level of unrar :)

It’s a pity, of course, okay. pay grandma for the Internet and go to my site. alumbur face.

EP> Of the people I know, more than 95% use version 3.
EP> Even fidomail is already packaged with version 3 by more than half of those who have rar.

Of the non-fidosh people I know, 99% do not use archivers at all. It's easier for them to buy a bigger screw. For transfer - USB Flash or USB screw.

EP> He really cares. He wants to compress the data more and save
EP> space. And keep up with progress.

That’s not what progress is all about. What is “progress” anyway? Can you
give a precise definition?
Are you afraid of falling behind “progress”? Is this a super goal or just an obsessive
desire?

well, now the main reason is not laziness at all, but total busyness, I don’t even know when I’ll get to the job, and whether I’ll get there... but almost a year ago it was... it was laziness :)
