HRiP vs ZIP
ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»
From Sergey Zotov → To All 30 September 2001
Have you ever tried to compare the quality of music compression by HRiP and ZIP? Probably not. But it turned out that the first one presses the music worse than the second one. Moreover, this is already noticeable on several Mouzons. On 10 MMCM PT3.4 modules, the wheeze lost 4
sectors, on 90 Andy Fer's Mouzons, the zip's gain was almost 20 sectors!
Some will say that this is a trifle, but then some do not understand the importance
of saving disk space.
Naturally, HRiP packs faster, but as it turned out, the time difference does not
exceed 1.5-1.6 times compared to ZIP. In addition, HRiP cannot
pack more than 255 files (only 1 byte is allocated for the amount
packed), while ZIP has no limit. By the way, there is one more positive moment in ZIP packaging! While archiving, you can drink some tea and grab something, and give your eyes a break from the monitor. :)))
So, gentlemen, think: drink some tea while the ZIP packs and save a couple of hundred
sectors on the disk or stare at the monitor looking at the progressive bar.
P.S. everything described above applies ONLY to MUSIC FILES. The quality of
packing and its speed of other files do not interest me at the moment.

Here Sergey Zotov writes to All and I wouldn’t mind intervening:

In fact, ZIP (in normal mode), losing in time, wins in
volume on almost all types of files, but to a greater extent not due to
a better compression ratio, but due to a smaller amount of redundant information in
file/block header, etc. (a long file is divided into blocks of 16k and
each has a long header).
By the way, on machines with shadow RAM you can force the Hrist-Library packer to produce
packed blocks of 32k - although this is implemented somewhat perversely -
efficiency increases significantly!

Somehow Wednesday October 3, 2001 at 00:34:36, Ilya and Sergey were arguing about HRiP vs

and if you slow it down a little and pack it not in 16K blocks but directly with files, then
it will compress better
