News from Brest
(site www.rscg.boom.ru)
05/27/2001> As mentioned earlier, our group began
work on a new space strategy, working title -
Empire. There are no analogues on the ZX-Spectrum, the game is a cross between PC's Galaxy, Master of Orion, Imperium Gallactica 2.
Cyberex/RS has been developing the economic part for two months now, it is too early to talk about release dates. Surely many people are now skeptical about such statements and various demo versions of games and they are basically right, in recent years a large number of promising projects on ZX have been abandoned, but I can assure you that we took writing the game quite seriously and we have no habit of abandoning unfinished projects. We don't expect to make a ton of $, it's
impossible on the ZX, and yet the game will most likely be distributed on a commercial basis.
Work continues on Real Commander 2.0, a month ago a fully functional version was
released and sent out to
everyonecoders who wish to participate in the development of modules. At
at the moment, detailed documentation on the procedures and
system variables of RC has already been written; as an example, the source code of the PT3Play module is attached. To date, in addition to the above-mentioned PT3Play module, a driver for 800k disks has been written (Sergey Krinitsin) and the game Alcotris (Imperio/PHG). The full version
will be released as soon as the internal structure
of the system is finalized (a module written for one beta version may not
work on another, the EQU file needs to be replaced and
recompiled).
Imperio/PHG continues to work on the conversion of the game
Another World to Speccy, apparently its intentions are quite serious and
is not going to give up. There is a huge amount of work ahead, AW has a lot of
graphics and animation, in this regard, we are looking for artists who have experience
editing converted pictures and sprites, write to Fido:
2:454/7.120, Pavel Demchuk.
05/26/2001> The 11th issue of the Brest newspaper Impulse has been released entirely
dedicated to the Millennium that took place in Minsk Demoparty. While
is only available in HTML form, Delta promises to
release the Spectrum version within a month... The number turned out to be somewhat gloomy,
according to Delt's Spectrum in Brest has been dead for several years,
quote: “Everything that Realsoft does in the facePawel can be called
necrophilia, violence against a decomposed corpse." Maybe it is and
so, it’s hard to just abandon a computer into which you have put so much
work. Still, I won’t abandon it because it’s good (c)

Maybe more, depending on my mood :) Maybe I won’t do it on the Spectrum at all, but
I’ll just throw it in the echo and that’s it...
PK> The number turned out to be somewhat gloomy
Why rejoice at a funeral?
PK> According to Delt, Spectrum in Brest is already dead several years.

PK> necrophilia, violence against a decomposed corpse.”
PK> Maybe it is so, it’s hard to just abandon the computer into which

I can draw a parallel... For example, your dog died. This means that you
should put it on the rug and look at it?
Even if you loved it before, you still have to bury it in the ground someday and
you will have to...
Estimate the volume of software released per year... Remember how 5
years ago, 10-20 new discs arrived every month. Now this number will probably not even be reached in a year.

How can Galaxy be mixed with something? :)
This is PBEM - and by the way, it is not focused on any platform,
even in principle, a computer is not required to play.
Will it be on ZX? PBEM? Is it possible?

IV> What is "PBEM"?
Play by e-mail - a game by correspondence. As a rule, everything is organized in the following way: there is a certain server/host (whoever wants, calls it that), which
once a day (let’s say) generates files-moves - files with data for each
player. Players take these files via mail (or direct connection), using them they make a move, as a result of which the game generates a file to be sent to the server. Before the server generates the next move, all players must
send their files with data about moves to the server.

play by email, a special case of pbm (play by mail)
Galaxy in its original form, of course you can’t play in Spec -
the reports are too big, from 5K to 5M (maybe more, but I
take the average batch).
That is, in principle, no one is stopping you from making a multiplayer
game on Spec like Galaxy - turn-based strategy, on every turn
players make their moves and transfer them to the server, which
calculates them and distributes reports for the next move.
Why am I interested in the PBEM aspect -
since the new game is announced as a cross between Galaxy and so on,
but from Galaxy (no matter how much I respect it :), except for pbem and the features accompanying
this principle, there is nothing to take.
PS And does anyone really need this on Specke?

The average report size is about 100k, at the end of the game they of course increase in
volume, but more I haven’t come across 500k.
In addition, the reports are sent packaged in ZIP, compressed 5-7 times,
since they consist of text information.

AW> PS And does anyone need this on Speccy?
Those who are familiar with Galaxy probably have the opportunity to play on a PC,
and Spectrum players have not yet come across this type of game.
I believe that the implementation of a client for Speccy is quite realistic, even if
the reports take up half a meter, but this does not mean that you need
to store it in memory in text form, the client is also available on a PCBefore
launch, it translates the report into a format convenient for itself.

YP> more precisely, after receiving moves from ALL players, a new file is generated :)
Not a fact. Some games generate moves regardless of whether all players have received moves. If you didn’t have time to send it, it means you missed a move.

Seven do not wait for one thing, the next report is generated on

YP> and what’s so bad about making a game by correspondence?
Let’s see, maybe Cyberex/RS will agree to write a client
(especially since Empire is based on the principles of Galaxy),
write to Netmail everyone who is interested in the implementation
of the client Galaxy+ on Speccy and how much you are willing to pay for it.
Such projects are not done on the ball, despite the apparent simplicity
of the client, implementing it on the ASMA Z80 is not very easy.
When developing Empire we had to develop procedures
working with 48-bit fractional numbers, and how much
we spent with attack and defense formulas containing
decimal logarithms and cube roots, a nightmare...

OM> Estimate the volume of software released per year... Remember how years

So everyone is crying so much, screaming that all the assholes don’t want to do anything, but
what??? As far as I know, one Slip/Action from the city of Khobarovsk, despite the fact that he is the only spektrumist in the city, sits and produces games, and of good
quality, and he does everything himself, music, graphics, and code. With this he
proves that everyone is an asshole, they found a reason or an atmosphere and do nothing.
A similar story happened in our group when I was in the army...
Everyone shouted that no one wanted to do anything, everyone was kicking the auger, and he alone
worked hard.
As a result, our group split into a bunch of supposedly active ones.
But apart from projects in the Omega Hackers Group, no one did anything did not release, and as a result
all their groups, and they themselves died on the vine.
So everything that happens onSpectrum only those who look at the bad side of things are to blame. Like: the Spectrum is dying, there’s no software, I’ll go to PC!
