You’ll have to go and visit me (or someone else). because
copy-protected programs are not transmitted over the network.

LUCKY DAY

Finally the right station. I go out onto the wet platform. Yes... The century is changing,
but these yellow station houses, the posters - “Beware of the train”.. Masterfully
made by an unknown avant-garde artist several decades
ago, are still just as impressive. The bulk of a diesel locomotive, a man doomedly
jumping on the way...
On the platform, eternal, filthychickens wander under the same eternal benches
of the sixties.... I walk to the central square of the village, where between
a haberdashery store and a post office is my workplace. I buy several wooden
boxes from a liquor store... They know me here, so the sellers
have no questions... I lay out the goods on the counter... Square
plastic boxes... Here comes the first customer, a dry old lady
with an angry, unfriendly face..
- Well, what, brought it?
“Yes,” I answer politely, “here you go, I ordered it especially for you
based on... Moonshine emulator. Cool thing.. Even a policeman walks around there,
the smell can cover you...
- Probably slow? - the old woman grumbles..
- What are you talking about, - I smile, - It flies at three gigahertz.
- I have four, - the old woman arrogantly declares.
- Well then, launch it in the highest resolution, - I answer.
The old woman counts out the money and takes away the compact.
- Well, look, - he throws it farewell old woman, - if the textures of water and primary soil
are the same, I’ll give you this disc...
- What are you talking about, - I express bewilderment, - Everything is as it should be, the programmers
specially bought moonshine to digitize... Almost got drunk..
“That’s right,” I think, “What a longing for youth.. Ready to pay
triple the price for elite software... She drove me around Moscow..It’s good
that there is a connection at Mitinsky... After all, emulators of strong alcoholic drinks
are a state monopoly... But what kind of emulators they have - the only one...
Because the Swedes received a grant. And what do those Swedes have about moonshine?
It’s good that our students, despite the fact that they are taught Delphi
, know how to program. They've formed a gang."
An old man comes up, fingering compacts with shaking hands...
- What, grandfather! - I laugh, - do you want to get hungover? shaking.
- Well, take this, - I take out the collection “Everything for the Hangover 2” from my bag.
- What is there? - asks the old man.
- Yes, everything is here, - I say, - Chat emulator, fidosh flame, even
the game “Virtual excommunication”, but this if your heart is healthy.
“It’s expensive, I suppose,” the old man frowns, “but he doesn’t want to put the disk back.”
“What kind of monster am I?” I am artistically amazed, “Don’t I really understand, I’ll give it to you for fifty dollars..
- For fifty dollars,” the grandfather is thinking.
“Take it?” “grandfather,” I say, and for the sake of persuasiveness I add, making a gesture towards the wine store, “vodka is more expensive..
“They brought me port for thirty,” the old man hesitates, “And there is beer.”
“Well, how much do you like that port wine?” I say.him, - you’ll drink and run again
...
- Well, good! - the old man decides, - I’ll take it...
The old man leaves, pressing his head into his shoulders like an old man. For some reason I feel sorry for him.
I see two teenagers rollerblading towards me. They roll up, rummage
in the box...
- Are there any Transformers? - the teenagers ask in unison...
- I don’t sell foreign software, - I tell them gloatingly, - There are “Vintik
and Shpuntik 3”, “Samodelkin fixes the galaxy”, “Dunno overdrive”.
- And what about Samodelkin? - they ask.
- Well, three, a hundred types of weapons, an episode at the orbital station "Rus",
- I answer.
- Like Duke IV?
- Duke Nukem is a mustdie, compared to this! - I grin.
- Do you have a shotgun? - asks one of the teenagers with a professional look.
- Izhvka, - I answer, - a good thing. The slime cheburashkas - the officials
who are trying to flood the station in the ocean - are blown to pieces with one
shot.
The teenagers whisper, dump out crumpled dozens, take the disc
and roll away.
Trade is going well, by twelve, half of my bag is empty.
They take everything, I’ve been telling my business friends for a long time that domestic software is a goldmine. And the soul is calm. We support our producers.
And in the outback, that’s all there is to it.
From a local bakerytwo ladies arrived, covered from head to toe in flour. They trampled around and asked:
- Do you have erotica?
- Yes, - I answer, - What kind do you like? Here is the hard package "Hayloft", here is the self-simulator "The Princess and the Pea". This is a remake.
- On a pea? - asks one lady.
- This is a metaphor, - I say, professionally suppressing a grin.
- We heard, - says one lady, - there is such a program, “One Hundred Years
of Solitude,” called.
For some reason I blush. It’s okay for them to have intelligence work here! Two compacts,
the latest squeak of virtual erotica. And what’s funny is that it’s our, domestic
production. Will they be able to do this in the West? And then there is love
in Russian and all that, real, off-platform feelings, and sex
which no one has, but we have always had. As I saw, last
Friday, on a friend’s laptop, I gave up all trading to hell.
I went home. To my wife.
- Yes, yes, - I say, - but to order.
- Can I order? - the ladies ask.
- Of course, - I take out my notebook, - next Wednesday, in the same place. It will cost one hundred and fifty rubles. Only the program is called
“One Hundred Years of One Night”. You confused it with the book. (I used to sell books,
so I know).
- Yes, it doesn’t matter to us, - say the ladies, - The main thing isso that it is soulful. Goodbye,
we'll be back on Wednesday.
They're leaving.
I'm trading. It's already five o'clock. In thirty minutes my train arrives. I'm sitting on the platform on a bench with a bottle of beer. Above me hangs another
poster, by the same outstanding artist. Huge, black wheels and a pathetic
man with an open mouth... And the inscription “Use the transitions”... For some reason it seems to me that these programs that I sell are a kind of
virtual transitions.. Security viaducts. Even hackers don't take risks; they use emulators. As soon as I thought about it, a man sat down next to me, wearing a worn
padded jacket and wrinkled pants.
- Did you bring it? - the man asks.
“Yes,” I answer and hand him the prepared book. There, between
the pages, there is a disk in a cardboard envelope.
The man hides the book in the bag, pulls out another one. Gives it to me. Nods
and leaves. I open the book and look. A shabby Fowles, in German,
with banknotes inside. Five hundred, as agreed.
Disks with protected programs are now a rarity; they are specially produced
for crackers in clandestine factories in the States. There it is easier with copyright
, it is possible to release protected bootlegs made
from ordinary software. They say that some American software companies
secretly support developersillegal defenses. They are not cheap, but these shady people, a kind of Black Lukichi of hacking, from the outback,
take them. There is a small but stable demand for any serious food for the mind, be it smart books or
locked computer disks.
The train approaches, the car is empty, I sit by the window and look. We set off,
the wet trees are crawling behind the dusty glass again. It was a good day
today.

The moderator reminds that talk about all sorts of hacks, cracks and crackers
in this conference is extremely unwelcome.

Why don’t you write to the authors of the protected software...

No, you didn’t understand me correctly!

It used to be like this, a hacker is given a program, he breaks it and gives it back, for this they pour him or give him money. And now I have to pay money for what I break?
Interesting policy.

In any case, I gave a monitor from SPECCY to a friend, so I don’t have the opportunity
to break anything yet, and breaking it under the PC is impossible... So
I’ll just have to drink vodka :)
