Hm.
ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»
From Dmitriy Putilov → To All 17 November 2003
I wonder if someone has already suggested the option of connecting the spec to the PC and using all the bells and whistles through it
or am I the only one so smart? :) And why don’t you like this option?
Happy All! Well, aren’t you tired of reading?

DP>, or am I the only one so smart? :) And why do you
DP> not like this option?
The point is not to use the “bells and whistles” - it has not yet been established as the main
standard and therefore there is no need for this, but to make the Speccy and work on it more
convenient and simpler. And the PC console has a lot of
inconveniences that it makes no sense to list, although there are advantages, but
we’re not talking about them.

somehow there was such a thought
DP> And why don’t you like this option?
1. you need to write creepy software for the PC that will process your
requests
2. everything will be terribly slow
3. In every software that needs to access the disk, you will need to
embed a kind of driver or make a hardware-based interceptor
4. not everyone has a PC, even if they have PC hardware
and in general it will resemble something like a console
See you, Dmitriy!

MS> 1. you need to write creepy software for the PC that will process
MS> your requests
Well, it’s clearly more comfortable to write on the PC than on the spec. ;)
MS> 2. everything will be terribly slow
Nope. Obviously no slower than _any_ other option.
MS> 3. in each software that will need to access the disk,
MS> it will be necessary to embed a kind of driver or make an interceptor based on
MS> hardware
The second is preferable.
MS> 4. not everyone has it PC, even in the presence of PC hardware
But this is funny. PII-266 with screw, SD rom and other things can be bought for 60
bucks. I think it's not expensive for USB, HDD and CD.
Happy Max! Well, aren’t you tired of reading?

It depends on how all this is implemented. I'm wondering, is it possible to connect the PC directly to the spec memory? Then everything will be very ugly.

You can. But Speccy is a full-fledged computer that is expensive and loved,
accordingly, people direct their efforts towards developing and improving its
parameters - towards their interests, and not towards reducing the cost of ownership. And
this is logical and is the same everywhere. Everything else is from the evil one. And, here, the connection between Speccy and
PC, as such, has long been implemented, but few people need it, due to the
availability of emulators.
DP> Happy Ivan!
Is there some kind of understatement here? (Well, whatever.. - that's all!)
Or is something missing - “Happy, oh Ivan?” ? ;)

The Spectrum was created as a weakly expandable platform. Making a PC out of it is even more evil, since it will no longer be a Spectrum. If Sinclair wanted this,
he would have inserted a bunch of slots there for memory and peripherals, as was (is) in the IBM
PC. ;)

Gee. It seems there was once a comma there, I don’t know where it went. :)
