File manager is infected with a virus!!!
ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»
From Valerij Kozhevnikoff → To All 15 December 1998
I remember they threw a subject program here. Boot for 512*192 video mode.
It contains a virus. This bastard assigns itself to all short (1-2 sectors) BASIC
loaders on the disk.
And after that, infected bootloaders acquire the ability to infect other
files.
He does it this way: in the directory he corrects the parameters of the initial track/sector
of the infected file to a free area of the disk, copies this file there, and
appends himself to it. Free disk space is effectively reduced.
I have encountered this virus before, and now I have encountered it again.
I can explain the treatment method.
I also have a program - an auditor that finds and shows
infected files.
ps\ by the way, according to the subject:
1. Why does the subject need 512k? Well, I don’t believe that just viewing texts requires so much memory. Precisely for viewing texts, because the subject
cannot do anything more.
2. If the exorbitant coolness of the authors does not allow writing for a smaller number of kilobytes, then what was worth supporting other machines? Pen-512 is not the only computer, and besides, it was never mass-produced.
Although calls to the configuration port are scattered everywhere, I can still
make a version for any other 512k machine in half an hour.
WBR, Jason.

Once, on December 15, 98, someone Valerij Kozhevnikoff wrote to All,
on the topic 'File manager - infected with a virus!!!'...
VK> I've encountered this virus before, and now I've encountered it again.
VK> I also have a program - an auditor that finds and shows

Can you post it?
Sincerely, Evgeniy aka EVP.

Somehow on 15 Dec 98 at 07:02:53 there was a conflict
Valerij Kozhevnikoff and All were arguing about File manager - infected with a virus!!!
I decided to continue this dialogue:
VK> 1. Why do I need a 512k subject? Well, I don’t believe that just viewing texts requires
VK> _so much_ memory. Precisely for viewing texts, because the subject
VK> cannot do anything else.
VK> 2. If the exorbitant coolness of the authors does not allow writing for a smaller
VK> number of kilobytes, then what was worth supporting other machines? Pen-512 is
not
VK> the only computer, and besides, it has never been mass-produced.
As far as I know, this FM is far from a finished product and should not have been passed around, so any attacks on the authors are 100% unfounded!
For those not in the know: the author of this product is VIC from XProject and since with
spec he seems to be then there is no talk about continuing to work on the project
there can be no talk, well, if only Denis continues what he started :)
For those who are even more ignorant :) this FM can also extract files from .tap's,
how to uninstall and accurately rename :) but all this is achieved by
correcting one glitch in the keyboard questionnaire.
I was with you Andrey.
From Denis Dmitriev → To All 18 December 1998
As for the virus - initially it wasn’t there... someone already tried :(
in general, FM was started one and a half to two years ago, and stopped at the moment
when the author bought himself a three... Therefore, discussing the shortcomings of the subject is no longer
relevant. It is much easier to write the same thing from scratch than to redo
what is.
With the best, Valerij!
... I will buy a moonshine still. Intermediary phone number 02.

Smiling sadly, Andrey Isaev 17 Dec 98 at 13:20 decided
to print the following lines for my friend Valerij Kozhevnikoff:
AI> For those even more ignorant :) this FM can also extract files from .tap's,
AI> and how to unpack and accurately rename :) but all this is achieved
AI> by correcting one glitch in the keyboard questionnaire.
It doesn’t work for me at all. There are 6x8 pieces of symbols on the screen... And so
it responds to the keys.
Come on, Andrey... That's it... Bye!
