CDROM for everyone

ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»

From Konstantin Sviridov To All 29 November 1998

Hello dear ALL!

A little about myself. Konstantin Sviridov, worked on ZX-compatible PCs from 1988 to 1995. The author and executor of the ideology and all hardware solutions of ZX-NEXT
(if one is still remembered).

My proposal is as follows.
Due to the fact that all implementations of ZX-compatible PCs still do not have
full support for CD-DRIVE, I propose to address this issue on
the following conditions:

1. Participants in this conference get acquainted with my proposal and
express their opinion on the matter question.
2.By the method of public and open discussion in this conference, a
programmer (writer, coder, etc.) or a group of them is selected who accepted this
proposal and signed this agreement (hereinafter referred to as the contractor).
3. Within the agreed period, the contractor develops software to
support CD-DRIVE from under IS-DOS, TR-DOS (the technical part hereinafter).
Konstantin Sviridov, hereinafter referred to as the customer, pays for this work
in accordance with the terms of the agreement reached.
----------------------------------------
The essence of the agreement.
Responsibilities of the customer.
Pay the contractor for the work in the amount of 500 USD
Partial prepayment is possible.

Responsibilities of the contractor
Develop software in 30 (thirty) days (described in
technical specifications) on FREEWARE terms (that is, free software), and
transferit for free distribution (as well as sources and
documentation). Including through this conference.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Additional responsibilities of the parties. In an informal style, but seriously. If
the performer requires a CD-DRIVE, I will provide it. In case of excellent
quality of work, the CD-DRIVE remains with the contractor. I can provide the
IDE controller from ZX-NEXT or bundled with it. The kit also includes 512K, AY, Turbo,
CMOS, XT-Keyboard CGA, 2LPT, coder PAL and a lot of useful little things. Also
a complete set of documentation, consultations on my part in case
of something malfunctioning. In addition to everything, a D100MPC printer (9 pins), a 3.5 1.44 disk drive and other little things by agreement. All this remains with the performer if he does the job perfectly. Otherwise, it is passed on to the person who fixes the bugs and shortcomings. The evaluation criterion will
be reviews in this conference.

I will try to help in posting information (documentation) on INTERNETE, recording
trial CDROMs and transferring (by technical means) information from Flop to
CDROM.
I will record 10 discs for free distribution to those who are ready to record
any number of copies and sell them for no more than the price of the media (maximum plus
beer). The only obstacle is the territorial location (I
live in Moscow).

Technicaltask (subject to adjustment depending on the wishes of ALL).
Develop, implement and debug utility drivers and (or) other
software to support ISO9660 standard CD-DRIVE drive
with an IDE interface. Adapt the software for IS-DOS and TR-DOS operating systems. Develop a
detailed description and HELP for all implemented software. Provide
the ability to easily make changes to the software in order to adapt it to
specific hardware.
As options:
Changing I/O ports for specific models
Replacing drivers
Auto detection of hardware.
In any case, the software should be compatible with the most common
IDE controller models and their implementations.

And finally, collect a set of programs, games, utilities distributions, descriptions, etc., in the IS-DOS and TR-DOS OS standard, if possible on one disk. Reasonable
disk fill level is at least 300 MB. Although the timing and volumes are subject to
discussion.

That seems to be all, with deep respect to everyone, I am waiting for answers,
Konstantin Sviridov,
MCNE, MCSE, lifelong fan of ZX-SPECTRUM:

Great, Konstantin!

This idea has been hovering in the minds of developers for quite some time, and I don’t know what
prevented the writing of software for the subject, because There are a great variety of IDE interfaces (homemade and
serial), and there are no technical problems in connecting.
I myself recently began collecting information on CD standards in order to
support it, but due to the lack of hardware there is no use in it (docs
docs,
who knows what it’s really like there?)
I would be very grateful if you would send a detailed description of the ISO
standard for working with CDs, or the address on the Internet, where you can get it.

ps: I don’t want to officially take on this work, because... I have never written anything
under is-dos, and under tr-dos there is no point in doing this, unless it is formatted in the form of a
library or generally a set of procedures in the source code for working with CDs.

2All: really no one will undertake it?!

With the best, Denis Dmitriev.

... I’ll buy a moonshine still. intermediary phone number 02.

From Ivan Mak To All 5 December 1998

Work on CD support is already underway for the Sprinter computer. In reality, there is a CD player, although it does not yet support all CD-ROMs connected via IDE. There are too many different versions even within the Atapi standard.

Wow! The Protoss are attacking my Zerlings! It's time to get going. Ivan.

Ha, and you crush them like flies like mammoths, especially the Archons (life 10 ;-) )

Well, that's it. I'm done pokeka, Ivan.

From Konstantin Sviridov To All 7 December 1998

Thanks to those who responded to my proposal. First of all, I will answer the most frequently asked question: “For what purpose did Konstantin Sviridov start all this?” > Let this be a gift to those people who, like me, once put
a piece of their soul into speccy:
A little more detail about what I think (correct me if I’m wrong) worries
people no less. Yes, I haven’t made a fortune or just money from spessy and I don’t hope to make it. Moreover, I don’t have a crimson monitor; in short, I don’t belong to the category of new Russians. Although, as correctly noted
Moscow is a money city and even system administrators (though not all) live here
not bad. And there was still a feeling of guilt towards those who, one way or another, were connected with ZX-NEXT. After all, because of my purely technical (non-commercial) approach to the project, it came to naught. True, I realized this much later.
In total, about 500 NEXTs were released (based on the number of NEXT ROM
VIDEOs flashed). And there is a lot left unrealized or half realized. Sergei Zonov was right when he told me that he himself took his time and boards from Leningrad to Avtovo on a bicycle. So don't be surprised, good people, sometimes you need to arrange a holiday in life.

The essence of the question.
So far, I know of two people who have openly expressed a desire to participate in
the project, these are:
Valerij Kozhevnikoff
Alex Noman
And inSt. Petersburg, Mr. Kondratyev (according to Boris Sokol, if he wants, then
will he take it?)

I will send out the documentation on the CD-DRIVE that I can dig up on Wednesday 12/09/1998
quite a lot of it and it’s all in English (I hope it’s not a hindrance).

Regarding the more specific T.Z. Since the CD ROM project is for everyone, I ask
to express your opinion regarding the types of supported controllers, the possibility of
connecting a CD DRIVE with a second device and working from under TR-DOS and other
bells and whistles. As for the Sprinter, I’m ready for cooperation, although as far as I
understand the software control of the CD DRIVE, as a CD player it
is much easier to work with files. I really want to use CD ROM not only as a large library, but also to be able to run games
directly from the CD. Of course, not everything is so simple.
I am waiting for suggestions and wishes until December 14, 1998
With respect
Konstantin Sviridov

They left with soap, I hope they get there. To begin with, they should be enough to at least
play music - the sources are here.
