Anti-offtopic: Reflections on the sound on the spec.

So I’m thinking here, what should the sound on the spec be like?
The reasoning is purely theoretical and rather of an advisory nature,
so don’t kick too hard, but join in the debate.

The subject :) has almost exhausted itself about the beeper-speaker speech for a long time no.
What to replace them with? There are two preliminary considerations here:
1. The concept, circuit design, design and software
interface of the new drive should be very carefully thought out with the aim
of maximizing the simplification of its implementation, maximum compatibility with
all modifications and clones of the spec and simplification of the adaptation of existing
software and the creation of new ones and, most importantly, with the aim of
creating a product that can become a _standard_, such like, say, TR-DOS
or AY. Considering that Spec, unfortunately, has not been in the stage of formation and primary development for a long time, we cannot afford a bunch of standards, they say, time will tell.
2. Approaches to the implementation of this project should proceed from the realities of the Spectrum, and not IBM. I mean resource requirements.
I think we love Spectrum for its attitudesimplicity/possibilities
and attempts to make an IBM out of it personally perplex me:
well, you want to screw up the memory, the clock, install a screw, CMOS,
extended video modes, multitask, graphical interface and play
WarCraft with all this - buy yourself a 286-12/1/40 and don’t fool yourself
and don’t make a monster out of the Speckie, especially since it the cost with these
bells and whistles today already exceeds the cost of three.
(please consider this not as an off-topic, but as an expression of love
for the “pure” Spectrum)
Here, however, there is one caveat - IMHO you can consider
the question of using ready-made boards, nodes and devices from IBM,
precisely _ready-made_, due to their low cost due to mature technologies
and the use of large chips, and not to build analogues on the 555 series.

It is for these reasons that it seems to me inappropriate
implementation of the approaches implemented in SoundDrive and DirectSound
Firstly, for hardware reasons - an attachment to the computer in
the form of a second computer... Secondly - resources, memory and performance.
Digital sound, a cool thing, there are no words, but these are huge
requirements for memory and speed, even at mediocre
quality. IMHO, the use of digital sound in _music_ is not
for specs.
It seems to me that the use of FM synthesis is much more suitable
Ideally, the use of ready-made chips (whereI don’t know how to get them yet
but I think you can find them if you want). In this case, the cost should be
low.
Issues of memory and speed disappear, the description of the instrument will take
6-12 bytes, the main volume is the description of the music itself, and this, of course,
is minuscule in comparison with digitization.
Quality is a moot point here. I personally find it more pleasant to listen to
a cymbal on FM than to one digitized at 8 kHz; I’m not talking about any electric pianos at all
- their quality is enough for specking.
But if someone desperately needs high-quality digital instruments
on spec, another approach is possible - implementing a standard MIDI interface
and there - if you want - connect a wave table (a megabyte costs $15-20 - 2 times cheaper than SoundDrive and the sound is incomparably better),
you want - synth (if you have one ;) And in general - MIDI is a standard for all
instruments and computer platforms, so there can be many applications.
Both of these approaches are good from the point of view of memory and speed,
give fairly high-quality sound, and should not be expensive.

Who thinks what? about this?

Vitalic

No, why screw up Spec for just playing around, now it’s quite
difficult for example with storing information, there are no 5.25" disks anywhere, and 3.5" are too expensive, so screw needed, but for mail it’s generally cool, but I haven’t seen a soaper under
IS-Dos yet. But I agree about CMOS, I didn’t have a great need for it.

expensive bells and whistles.

There are no thoughts and there won’t be any.:( there are no standards for sound, except
AY, SD, GS, COVOX, BEEPER. And how many people (namely people) will they implement this Midi interface? I think that only a few will probably be fans. There are a lot of questions with software support, etc. And if you want sound, then get yourself a PC and
don’t suffer. Imho 2 computers are better than 1. respect SP/PoS.

From a hardware point of view - a regular serial port.
From a software point of view - a certain standard exchange protocol between musical
instruments, containing information about the selected instrument, note,
controlling controllers. Those. To put it simply, a MIDI file is
music recorded in the form of standard commands (which instrument to play which
note, etc.), which are transmitted via this serial
interface to the device, which plays it all.
Such a device could be, for example, a WaveTable-daughter from an offtopic,
which contains a bank of digitized instruments.
The main thing is that it is a standard to which you can connect various
devices, based on their capabilities and requirements.

Yes, by the way, no one refuses AY - you can combine them. On FM, for example, the drums don't come out very well. They can be hung on AY, and let the FM play the rest
VS> Memory and speed issues disappear, the description of the instrument

6-12 bytes for instruments is only immediate programming
FM registers, but you can change the values just like on AY. Then it will be possible to squeeze out more interesting sounds. But it’s true that the execution time of the player
will increase, and if the registers are programmed just once, it will

KF> Are you saying that you can listen to 8-bit music in fashion on

Don’t be so categorical. It’s just that the samples in the vast majority of mods are digitized at a sampling frequency of 4-8 kHz, and this is suks. Samples
8 bit / 22 kHz sound no worse than on a good tape recorder.

KF> Regular

KF> find metal music for GS-ku.

I bet you won’t find metal music for pussy either - 16 bit,
44 kHz. I am convinced that it is _impossible_ to write real _metal_ on a computer.
What exists is feces, because... It’s impossible to transfer a live guitar to samples
(well, unless you digitize the entire guitar part). And if you digitize the whole batch, then it will take up _immeasurably_, and will not fit into GS. They don't do this on the pussy either. You can go the other way and reduce the batch size at the expense of quality. And this is also suks. The computer and live music are incompatible. I say this as a
pisish/spectrum composer.

I wish you good luck!
Andrew.

DS> A little subtlety: AY is FM :) More precisely, a special case.
Hmm... But it seemed to me that no. FM, it seems, is Frequency modulation.
In AY, frequencies seem to be not modulated. Although, if the envelope is called a modulator, then in principle it can be called AY FM, but it seems not. If I'm wrong -
correct.

Bye, Denis! With the best wishes, Megus of Brainwave.

You could say it’s a special case of RS232 (from the point of view of the exchange protocol)

We need to rummage through the bins. Isn’t Tim on the server?

There are still thoughts on MIDI.
Yesterday, remembering that it was mentioned somewhere that the 128th spec
implemented an RS232/MIDI interface, I started digging for the 128th ROM.
There really is such a letter. There are input/output
procedures via RS232 and channel P (printer) is configured for them.
But, the main thing is there is a procedure that software implements the output
byte in the battery through bit 2 of port A AY in accordance with the
MIDI protocol. The procedure is used, in particular, when executing the command
128th BASIC PLAY "Z??" - MIDI command output. But this is far from all. This subru is used by two more, strikingly reminiscent
of the implementation of MIDI commands “turn on note” and “turn off note”.
That’s not all either, but I haven’t dug further yet, because
I’m a small coder, but I’m a big lazy person! :-))
In general, the MIDI protocol is implemented in the 128th, even now connect
the scoreboard (three wires - MIDI Out (port A AY), ground and +5V and the audio output - to the amplifier (this is a solid IMHO, haven’t checkedyet!)) and the
PLAY commands you can already play, and by writing a MIDI file player using
ready-made procedures in ROM, you can play midi with awesome quality!
But! :( The protocol, as I already said, is implemented in software
(i.e., the entire timing diagram is on delays), so the processor is almost
fully loaded and use in games is difficult, although
the devil knows, we need to fully understand and count the clock cycles...
You can unload the processor by implementing the interface in hardware.
It will still be much simpler than gadgets that implement
sampler approach.
These are the preliminary considerations. It would be better, of course,
to first figure it out and try to do it, and then write,
but I’m afraid that because of laziness I will abandon this matter and the idea will disappear.
So, whoever is interested, join the discussion.

Vitalic

They are modulated. By processor.

There are two methods of extracting sound on a computer - FM and samples.

It is most often connected as a daughter board to the sound board via a special
WaveTable Connector (two rows of pins, I don’t remember how many in total),
but for what we are talking about, only ^ is needed, and
sound output. Temporaries - as I wrote, a special case of RS-232 -
8 bits, 1 start, 1 stop, 31.25kbaud (or something like that).
Hardware - TTL levels (not bipolar, as in RS-232, and not
current loop, as in standard MIDI)

If by midicart you mean a wavetable, then you just
need to send a stream of standard midi messages to it, for example (simplified)
“play instrument #45 note C” and, since sounds are hardwired into it,
for example, standard 128 General MIDI instruments and 47 drums,
then she is obliged to fulfill this order :-))
Found as an example on www.cirrus.com description of their chip
CS9236 in which inside :) MIDI interface, synthesizer, ROM of instruments
(see above), effects processor (digital reverb and chorus), RAM of parameters
effects, and a stereo output. They don’t give a price, there is a detailed description
in *.pdf :((Interestingly, they practice sending developers free
samples of chips, but this ball is not included in the list :((( Damn, how can
get a couple of pieces? I think the price should not exceed $10-15, and maybe
even less.

YZ> We'll wait....
The MIDI doc and the description of DMA-Sound have gone awry - write
how you got it.
By the way, yesterday I dug up a bunch of MIDI
and sound programming docs on the internet, a bunch of source codes.
I haven't even figured it out yet.

Now for MIDI in the 128th ROM.

Here are the procedures associated with MIDI, which I dug up
in the 128th ROM:

- --- #11A3 ----------------------------------------------

The byte transferred to A transmits starting from ml. bit
to port A AY (bit 2), in accordance with the MIDI protocol
with the formation of start and stop bits. The entire
time diagram is made by delays.

- --- #116E ----------------------------------------------

Transmits a MIDI message “turn on note”:
- takes the MIDI channel number from (IX+1), checks the 7th bit
(in some cases there is #FF instead of the channel number -
then RET), makes OR #90 (this is the NoteOn command)
and issues a call #11A3
- takes the note number from (IX+0) and - there :)
- the next byte that should be transmitted according to the
MIDI standard - keystroke speed. Takes some value
from (IX+4), slightly transforms it and - #11A3

- --- #118D ---------------------------------------------------

Transmits a MIDI "off note" message:
- takes the MIDI channel number from (IX+1), checks the 7th bit,
makes OR #80 ( commandNoteOff)
and issues a call #11A3
- takes the note number from (IX+0) and - there :)
- here the speed of releasing the key is fixed - #40

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

When executing the 128th BASIC PLAY command with the parameter
Z (transmit the number to the MIDI port), the number after Z
is read and transmitted (#0B84 - #0CEE - #11A3)

When executing the 128th BASIC PLAY command with parameter
Y (set the MIDI channel number), the number after Y
is read and written to (IX+1) (#0B84 - #0CDD - #0B1D)

---------------------------------------------------------------

That's all I've found so far (I must admit, I haven't
dug any further )

Good luck!
Vitalic

As I understand in a simplified way, I wanted to know how NOT in a simplified way, i.e. What kind of midi messages are these and what kind of messages are there in general, if any. Let's say I want to play
"TO" with instrument #45, what should I send? And what can be sent there in general.
