ZXNet echo conference «real.speccy»

From Alexandr Machkasovskij To All 29 April 2000

Hello All!!!

Today the time has come when Spectrum needs our help more than ever. Today Spectrum has accumulated a huge number of problems, and we are obliged to solve them. It's already the year 2000, and the problem under the name of OS literally hung in the air in a strange way. I propose to solve it (bring it down to earth). Lately we have
had a lot of words about all sorts of new OS, but for some reason they are not
seen.
A few months ago, after I talked with one
Spectrumist and he suggested that I create an OS, I, of course, did not immediately
agree, but after he told me about his new project,
I agreed.
And so, if you care about the fate of the Spectrum, if you want to see
a new one heyday of the Spectrum, don’t delay with answers. The future of
the new Spectrum with the new OS is in your hands.

Please send your questionnaires to:
2:5007/15.11 TO Alexandr Machkasovskij

Best regards, Alexander.

This is not entirely true, IMHO. There are realists and some are proud of the fact that they are realists (for example, I :)). In my opinion, the problem is the outflow of users and, paradoxically, lamers. And the advanced spektrumists (coders, hackers, just good at rummaging) are to blame for this, IMHO, if they didn’t shout at every opportunity
“lamers - mazday!”, “users - suck!” and didn’t wave (I apologize
for the rough definition), but chuckled quietly to themselves and condescendingly patted those who weren’t particularly enlightened on the head (with software :)), then there would be
two or three times more users (real-life people!) on Speck. Personally, I know several
people who have Speckies, but they are simply not interested in playing old games
(after all, now most of the new programs are system ones), and
they are afraid to connect to ZXNet - they say everyone there is so cool, they will spit on them. There are also
those who simply don’t want to learn anything, but just want to consume
(gambles). And such aspirations are now weakly supported among spektrumists, IMHO (not to say vice versa), so there is an outflow of existing users. But there are real people, it’s just their computers gathering dust idle.

AM> Of course, many are attracted to other platforms, our
AM> task is to keep them,
AM> if they are interested in the axis, programming, cool games,
AM> graphics...
Yes, manythey leave Speccy precisely for this reason, and some simply throw
Speccy on the shelf because of the lack of it.

AM> ...Because of these considerations alone, we must try
AM> to give them this.
We must. Personally, I can name two frozen projects, the implementation of which
might, IMHO, increase interest in Speccy - DOOM (DR), Mortal Kombat (with
large(!) figures, it’s a pity that the demo didn’t go further).

AM> Where is your confidence, or you can only scream
AM> about demise.
I’m not a particularly strong coder, but I can create schedule.

Explain why lamers are on any platform? The benefit from them is zero.

But you yourself try to communicate with them from the position of “big brother”. This is impossible to tolerate!

Two to three times more lamers? To the garden.

From Alex Bairov To All 3 May 2000

Of course I agree, since the thought is mainly mine. Let's rather say this:
new/inexperienced Spectrum users should be treated with respect, and not
as we know happens.
And users are needed. It is a pity that, for example, accounting programs or text editors/processors have not become popular. Please note that the application software is installed on most PCs. That's right, smallsoft office 6, 98 or 2000 (bugs).
And one more thing. I don’t know how it is in large Russian cities (primarily Moscow and St. Petersburg), but in Lvov I remember only one company that sold Specky well.
Yes, alone. “What,” you say, “is Uncle Sasha at the market or Uncle Petya in the basement?” And what healthy person, who does not know the intricacies of the matter, will go to a radio market to buy something serious from a stranger? It's a different matter at a company, where even its name will be on the body. It is a pity that despite the advertising, the company is unknown to the general population. Is she still alive? And the approach was
100% correct.
ZXNet should be approached with the same seriousness, although not with a commercial
approach.

You yourself know very well that there are spektrumists located so to speak in
"apart" and they simply may not even know about the appearance of a new OS. I myself was once like this, and if not for a happy accident, I would still be like this.

VK> Why? Well, you don’t have an OS and you don’t want to have one, then
VK> the logical question is “Do you need Speck at all?”
Why? Such a statement is tantamount to “do you have a perfect, or do you not need Speck?” I repeat, there are people who simply cannot get a new OS, there are
and those who are satisfied with TR-DOS and they are not going to rack their brains in
searching for and mastering a new OS - for example, they don’t have time, connections, money, etc.
So, does this mean that they have given up on Spec??? If you think like this, then it
means that _you_ gave up on Spec, since you don’t care who, how, when and at all
can get the OS.

VK> So he took it and did it in five minutes?
OS, IMHO, is also not done in 5 minutes. Especially if they expect to make

Well, here they are... Again, grist for the encoder's mill, and the user is again overboard. That's how it's always been. I agree, the best programming conditions are better software, but until the OS
reaches everyone (or at least the majority), until the programmers master it, and until
they write something!... The user will have left completely by then, the user is not able
to wait, especially if he knows that somewhere there is a new OS, but he doesn’t have it,
somewhere they write for the OS, but it’s not available to him, and besides They stopped making software focused on the good old OS. A person will simply send everything to ... and go
to a more “beautiful” PC, or will forget about the computer altogether.

There are good programs, and you don’t need too many of them (although it wouldn’t hurt :)) and
such programs (gams) play a good role. I personally know a person who BOUGHT a
ZX128 (previously he had a 48 and he had already scored) because he saw my “Crow”!
Enthusiasmit lasted for about half a year - a year, now, having played enough of "Crow" and not getting any new steering games, he begins to score. This is why, first of all
it is necessary to support gaming, high-quality software, and when it accumulates, you can
pursue the OS.

Oh, well, the GURU is right in all your beautiful feathers. And where do people like this come from? Tell me, how can you humiliate a person who has no knowledge in some area? Why not calmly point out his mistakes instead and explain the whole point? And as you say, on the Spectrum
there will only be cool coders who will begin to crush each other with their authority. What's good about this?

Gurus in their “childhood” are not lame. They sit quietly and study. It’s hard for me to
imagine the same Vlodek yelling “RK-86 - Mazda, Spectrum - rulez!”

r> Tell me, how can you humiliate a person in some area
r> who doesn’t know anything?

If he realizes his ignorance, then only a lamer will humiliate him.

r> Why not instead calmly show
r> his mistakes and explain the whole point?

You look like you don't understand. Have you tried to point out the lamer's mistakes? Try. He
will start shouting that everything is right with him, he is always right, he will go so far as to insult
and as a result you simply will not want to communicate with him. Why? If a person does not
accept criticism.

r> And since you are arguing on the Spectrum
r> there will only be cool coders who will begin to put pressure on each other
r> with their authority. What's good about this?

Do you want teapots to run around? The Spectrum has always been a machine for the chosen few - those who are able to assemble such a “beast” for themselves and are able to tame it.
Those who used it as a toy have long gone to all sorts of shogi and
megadrives.
And why are only the coders “cool”? Has everyone already forgotten about the iron workers?

Well, if Slava had made ChV-2, then everything would have died out for a couple of months, everyone would have played until they were blue in the face. I don't see anything good in this. Do you think coders should sit and churn out games? In Gense? You also want to untie your hands. And for some people

From Vladimir Klymus To All 5 May 2000

AM> Why? Such a statement is tantamount to “do you have a perfect, or

No. Perfect - using basic capabilities. A new OS or, let's say, a hardware bells and whistle is an expansion of the machine's capabilities.

AM> I repeat, there are people who simply will not be able

It means they don’t care whether the platform develops or not. They don't want to
put in the effort to improve their system. We need to support them too,
but this will slow down the pace of development. And it’s not a fact that the work of our valiant coders will reach such people, because they don’t have time, connections, money.

AM> If you talk like that, it means that it’s _you_
AM> who gave up on Spec, since you don’t care who, how, when and even whether

ZX is not a PC, you need to understand the situation. There is no time to accelerate. And there’s no point
comparing the starting positions of the vents and the new OS on the ZX - the vents were the first
(of their kind), but here, you know, everything has already faded away... By the way, you didn’t
answer the question you got into - what then?

From Anton Matyuhin To All 5 May 2000

VB> 5 less than
VB> a year and a half ago, and therefore, why the hell is it necessary?
It is necessary, if only because there are still spektrumists, there is ZXNet and there are
potential users. The OS is another matter, yes I agree - the OS does not meet the demand a little (IMHO), but it is NECESSARY to do it and make a fuss. It's enough to finish
DOOM and I'm sure it will give new blood. And if after some time
you add a normal, big Mortal Kombat (the one that stopped in the demo) -
it will be absolutely cool. And just in case the second “Raven” will be finished, add to this the work of other masters and you get a pretty decent prospect. And
if the question arises about who will write for this, then there is a simple answer - you can
still make money on software, just the software must be of high quality (personally, without
hesitation, I paid $2 for “ChV”).

You contradict yourself - if Spec is only for those who can assemble it themselves
and in addition also cheat for themselves, then who will need your services as a hardware guy
or programmer? But if you do something and show it to someone, then spit will immediately fly from all sides - because everyone is cool and everyone wants to show
their coolness, like you, for example. This philosophy is precisely what is deadly for Specky, and it is precisely because of such reasoning that Specky is now experiencing an outflow of users. And also - if you follow your words, then I _in principle_
cannot write this letter - I’m not a cool coder (I personally can’t say about
myself that I’m a coder at all), I’m not a hardware guy, what then am I doing on Specky??? Yes
even on ZXNet??? Yes, following from your words, there is simply no place for me here! SoWhat,
should I switch to “dandy”?

From Alex Bairov To All 6 May 2000

This is a way of writing programs (philosophy?). The main idea is that the code is distributed freely and freely. It is also freely allowed to make changes.
In this case, this is valuable, because GNU systems have a lot of experience in How to
write free and open source programs. Using the network,
of course. The greatest value is the workflow of centralized
program writing.
Apache, Netscape/Mozilla, Linux and a good
part of programs for Linux and not only are written this way or almost this way. About a year ago, an internal melkosoft document (memo) was leaked, which concluded that it was GNU that posed the greatest threat to the company.
Other materials can be found at www.gnu.org

I have a hard time imagining how to blur THIS into the echo.

You misunderstood :)
They have too little and mostly fragmentary knowledge. Such people
cannot teach good things. It’s quite possible to do anti-advertising on the platform. The only thing is to drive them into “reservations”, attach a money-producing machine on one side, and a direct channel to the software authors on the other. :)

But for those who are not suitable, let them make system software, but why agitate everyone

Hmm. Even if I’m so bad, I extinguish all the lamers, put users under benches,
and just kill everyone else with a finger (even my team has one :))), then
it doesn’t change anything - there are lamers and they’re not really needed. Because:
a) they don’t do anything;
b) they don’t want to learn.

And a replacement OS (but not an add-on) TR-DOS is still needed. Multitasking is funny. Why?
I would leave compatibility with TR-DOS (more precisely, with #3d13), but this is an extra headache
for the authors of the axis.
In any case, hardware changes will have to be made. How else can Speck's life be extended? New "din"? This will be a prolongation of agony, not life.
If someone thinks that the current state of affairs is enough, that is his right.
But we should not be equal to such people. If Intel, for example, followed
those who only need an 8086, then within a year some
i8086-300 would go into production.
Everyone would be happy and everything would be compatible.

WBR, Vladimir.

AM> The benefits for the manufacturer from them are greater than from the “cool” ones.

On PC you have to be very, very cool (that’s right, without quotes) so as not to depend on the manufacturer of software and hard. Or are you proposing to manufacture multilayer boards and chips using 0.18 micron technology on the knees?

The PC “suffers” from something else - high technology is put on the conveyor belt,

By the way, about horse teapots. Have you forgotten how a couple of years ago everyone was making fun of them and their Windows? Even a certain stereotype emerged. They were having fun and went to... Amiga. :)
