-=────────────────────────────< UU Wizard >> Print FX is a text printing utility. It prints the finished
text file using various fonts, most of which
are not available when printing in text mode, and for printing which
the graphics capabilities of the printer are used. In addition,
the program provides many additional service functions,
such as breaking text into pages of any length, changing the font
during printing, numbering pages and much more.
The main font with which the text is printed is the typewriter font. How is this font different from the NLQ font that you may have in your printer? Firstly, the strictly standard sizes of the characters, exactly corresponding to the letters of the typewriter (of course, as far as the matrix printer allows), which cannot be said about the NLQ font, the characters of which are somewhat smaller in height. Secondly, the NLQ mode is not available in all printer models, while the graphics mode is supported by almost all matrix printers.
Of course, you have to pay for quality. Since Print FX uses the graphic mode when printing, the printing speed is greatly
reduced compared to the text mode. But such quality is required only for important documents.
This manual will help you understand how the program works. It was compiled for version Print FX 1.1. Compared
with the earlier version 1.0, version 1.1 has a built-in font editor, a character width setting mode, processes more
text editor codes and can work with a custom
printer driver.
Print FX works with texts of the most common text editor on the ZX
Spectrum 48K TLW2. The program processes
various versions of the editor's russification: according to encoding, somewhat
reminiscent of KOI-8 (TLW2+ format), and according to the encoding of the
TLW2M editor.
So, you have launched the PRINT FX program. After loading, you will see a large blue window. In its top line there is a
menu. Selecting any option in the menu is carried out by pointing
the pointer arrow at the corresponding word (at the same time it is
highlighted in color or inversion) and pressing the selection button.
The insole is controlled by a Kempston joystick or keys:
O and 6 - left
P and 7 - right
A and 8 - down
Q and 9 - up
space and 0 - select
H - setting
arrows inward
current window

Having selected any function, you will see another windowwith
different commands. Selecting them is done in the same way as selecting a function in the main menu. To cancel a command selection, move the
arrow outside the last open window and press the
select button. The window will close and you will return to the previous step. This
control system is probably familiar to you from working with Artstudio,
DCU and other programs with a developed window system, so
difficulties here, I hope, will not arise.
To load text into the computer's memory for printing,
open the FILE menu. You will see 3 functions:
Load text - loading text. If the specified file
is missing, the message File not found is displayed and the operation is cancelled. If
the file is too long, the message File too big is displayed.
The maximum length of the loaded text is 77*256=19712
bytes.
Catalog - displays the disk directory.
Set drive - selects the drive (A, B, C, D).
After loading the text, it will appear in the main window fragment.
Part of the text visible on the screen can be moved using arrows
located on the right border of the window.
PRINT menu - printing the loaded text. In it you can
select:
GO - start printing text.
Set mode - setting the base character width. Using
TLW control codes you can only set twice as wide
or narrowfont than standard. The width of a standard character
is usually such that one line can fit 80 characters. You
can change this number: 40, 48, 53, 60, 80
or 160 characters per line are set, and for the 80 character option
there is a clean and draft mode (marked + and
-, respectively). In draft mode, printing is slightly faster and less high quality.
OPTIONS menu. The most complex menu of the program, requiring more
detailed discussion.
Lines - setting the number of lines on the page. The default
is set to 44 lines. When page autonumbering is enabled
keep in mind that the top 2 lines are occupied by the page number, but they are not included in the number of lines set by this function.
Codes - editing control codes. Some of the
TLW control codes are processed by the PRINT FX program.
Here it is necessary to make a small digression and explain
how text characters are processed and what “text in
TLW format” is.
Characters with codes 13 and 14 indicate the end of the line, other
characters with codes from 0 to 31 are ignored. Also
codes 152..161 and 229..255 are ignored (the area of transition codes in BASIC and
strings, respectively). Characters with codes from 165 to 228 are always
perceived as Russian letters (TLW2M format, see below).book
"System programs for the ZX Spectrum", Piter Ltd, issue 1, p.
86), codes 32..127 - as ASCII or the Russian half of KOI-8, depending on the current character generator. Switching
character generators is carried out by the first two printer control operators; at the beginning of printing, a Latin
character generator (TLW2+ format) is installed. The code area 128..151 is reserved
for operators to directly control the printer. But since the printer is controlled through the PRINT FX work procedures in the graphics, all responsibility for recognizing and processing control statements falls on the programs.
The actual code in the text is calculated by addition operator number and 127. For example, token 1 (usually the inclusion of the Russian
character generator) has a code in the text 1+127=128, token 24 -
24+127=151, etc.
Since the token table (called in TLW2 by pressing CS/SS+T)
is not the same in different versions of the editor, there is a need
for a control code customizer that allows you to adjust Print FX
to a specific TLW instance. This customizer is called when you select Codes.
After launch, the program is configured for the TLW2+ editor. But if
you use, say, TLW2M, then you will have to change
a few codes. For example, in TLW2MThere is no switching operator to Russian or Latin character generator - just Russian and Latin letters have different codes. Therefore, disable the action of the operators Rus and Lat - assign unused
codes to them, for example, 17 or 18. And code 1, previously used as Rus,
assign to New page. By doing this, rebuild the token table to suit your version of the editor. And in order not to have to deal with this rather tedious procedure every time, write the table to disk (Save function) and after each start of the program, read it using the Load function.
