TR-DOS file extensions

Hello, All! ═══════════════════ ExtFiles.1 ══════════════════ (c) Ivan Roshchin, Moscow Fido: 2:5020/689.53 ZXNet: 500:95/462.53 E-mail: asder_ffc@softhome.net WWW: http://www.zx.ru/echo/roschin TR-DOS file extensions ──────────────────────── ("Radio Amateur. Your Computer" 12/2000) Imagine this situation: you come across a TR-DOS file, and what is in it is unclear. We tried to look content - and only saw that it was not text... What to do next? Erase this file? This is, of course, the easiest way, and the place will be free on the disk. :-) But who knows what you're getting at? will you lose? What if there was something useful or at least interesting there? It is much more correct not to erase an unfamiliar file immediately, but take a closer look at its expansion first. Then, using using the table of extensions given in this article, you can draw conclusions about the type of information contained in the file and whether What programs can be used to work with it? How can you see it, this expansion? "What a stupid question?" - you might think. But not everything is as simple as it may seem with at first glance. :-) Here's the thing: originally in TR-DOS the file extension was one-character, and the extensions themselves were only four. Later this seemed not enough, and software writers decided to increase the extension length to threecharacters - as in MS-DOS. But making changes to the TR-DOS ROM, to ensure the ability to work correctly with three-character no one began to use extensions using the operating system. On the one hand, this is correct - after all, any change in ROM can lead to the inoperability of existing programs. But this also leads to certain inconveniences - when performing "CAT" command shows only the first character of the extension of each file. You can see the extension in full only by using special shell programs - for example, "Real Commander". A few words about the table. It is formed as follows principle: if there is a TR-DOS program that processes files with with this extension - it is included in the table. Thus, except for the “pure Spectrum” ones known to me at this moment extensions, there were also extensions of some file types, which first appeared on other computer platforms (AMiGA, PC). At the same time, the table also shows the names TR-DOS programs for working with such files (for example, files with the "zip" extension can be processed using the program "pkunZIP 1.3f"). The extensions in the table are listed in alphabetical order. The table may also be useful to authors of programs in case when it becomes necessary to select an extension for "your" file format. To avoid confusion, the extensionit is better to choose either something that has not yet been used or the most appropriate in meaning. The information presented in the table is collected from various sources and from our own observations. Of course she doesn't are absolutely complete, so please send clarifications and additions - they will be included in the latest version of this article, which will be regularly posted on my web page. ╔════════════╤══════════════════ ═══════════════════════════════╗ ║ Expansion │ Comment ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ # │ Direct or sequential access file ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ Screen packed with "ASC" compressor without ║ ║ $ │ unpacker (such files are created by the program ║ ║ │ "Quick Screen Viewer 1.0") ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ File in "Hobeta" format; second character ║ ║ │ extension shows what the extension was ║ ║$? │ source file. ║ ║ │ Programs for processing: "Hobeta 1.1", ║ ║ │ "Godzilla 2.0 Pro", "File extractor 1.1b". ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢║ > │ Module for the graphic editor "Burial Gfx ║ ║ │ Editor" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ + │ RGB screen created in the "Multistudio" program ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ 0??,1??,...│ Parts of a long file; last two characters ║ ║ │ extensions - the same as the source file ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ 1) LZ Compressor archive ║ ║ │ 2) source code of the program in assembler ║ ║ A │ in one of the following formats: "TASM 3", ║ ║ │ "TASM 4 (by XLD)", "TASM 4 (by RST7)", ║ ║ │ "GENS" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ a │ Source text of the program in assembler ║ ║ │ in "MASM 1.1" format ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ ANSI graphics. ║ ║ ans │ Program for processing: "ANSI viewer/player ║ ║ │ 0.1 alpha". ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢║ │ 1) source code of the program in assembler ║ ║ asm │ in plain text format ║ ║ │ 2) source code of the program in assembler ║ ║ │ in "ZX ASM 3.10" format ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ B │ Program in BASIC ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ Graphic file. ║ ║ bmp │ Programs for processing: "Bitmap Viewer 2.0 ║ ║ │ BETA", "ZX<>BMP Converter 2.0". ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ C │ Code file ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ c │ 1) C program ║ ║ │ 2) font created in the editor "Chr Editor" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ Vector font. ║ ║ chr │ Programs for processing: "Chr Editor 1.50", ║ ║ │ "ChrPrint 1.06", "Burial Gfx Editor 1.07/2". ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ D │ Data array ║╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ diz │ Text description file ║ ║ │ (for example, "file_id.diz") ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ Document created in a text editor ║ ║ doc │ "Microsoft Word". ║ ║ │ Program for processing: "WordCon". ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ drv │ Printer driver for assembler "ZX ASM 3.10" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ E │ Saved game state "ELITE 3" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ 1) music module created in the editor ║ ║ F │ "Sound Tracker Pro" ║ ║ │ 2) sprite created in the "Sprite Master" editor║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ fnt │ Font used in the assembler "ZX ASM 3.10" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ G │ Sprite created in the "Sprite Edit" editor ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ GTR │ Music module created in the editor ║║ │ "Global Tracker" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ H │ Source text of the program in assembler in ║ ║ │ "ALASM" format ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ h │ Library connected to a C program ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ hrp │ HRIP Archive ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ │ 1) sample for the music editor ║ ║ │ "Super Sonic" ║ ║ I │ 2) digitized sample for a music editor ║ ║ │ "Instrument" ║ ║ │ 3) shortcut for the file shell "Windows 2000" ║ ║ │ (not to be confused with the OS of the same name for PC!) ;-) ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ i │ Tool for the graphic editor "Graphic ║ ║ │ Station" ║ ╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ║ imp │ Text conversion module for assembler ║ ║ │ "ZX ASM 3.10" ║╟────────────┼────────────────── ───────────────────────────────╢ ════════════════════════ ════════════════════════ Best regards, Ivan Roshchin. Hello Ivan! 14 Jan 01 07:38, Ivan Roshin -> All: IR> ║ PKT, pkt │ Postal package. ║ It can also be called Ckt, if the old pkunzip unpacked it... IR> ║ rom │ ROM contents ║ and bin too. IR> ║ SCR, scr │ Screen file ║ or screen saver from Windows ;) IR> ║ v │ Vector image created in graphic ║ vi1 (64 bytes in size) - m/s CMOS dump. The CMOS Commander program is being created, it writes all 64 registers to the file, but when reading it restores it to The CMOS chip contains only data registers (which start from 0Eh inclusive). This extension was invented because the Soviet analogue of this m/s is 512VI1. IR> ║ ZIP │ ZXZIP Archive ║ zxz - the same thing. In MSDOS and ISDOS, ZXZIP is often renamed to ZXZ. On Spectrum needs to rename it back to ZIP accordingly. com, set, bat, res, ovr - can be from ISDOS. Especially if there are massive numbers there (except bat ;) there are commands LD C,n:RST 16 mnu - shell menu in ISDOS img - disk image in ISDOS. There may not necessarily be an ISDOS disk (this isit could easily be a renamed TRD), because it’s just a dump like TRD. Under ISDOS has a program image.com that deploys this image to a floppy disk. Best regards, Evgeniy.
