From now on, the fight against cybercrime is among the FBI's top ten priorities.
May 29, US Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Robert Mueller
announced plans for further reorganization of his department. Should
It should be especially noted that among the top ten priority areas of the FBI's work,
along with anti-terrorist activities and the fight against corruption
now includes the fight against high-tech crimes and
protecting the US from cyber attacks. The plan also includes improvements
technical base of the FBI to more successfully carry out its missions.
As ZDNet reports, Mueller believes that by preventing hi-tech
crimes, the FBI protects the entire country's infrastructure, and that
Cyberterrorism and cybercrime can happen anywhere, and that
an agency like the FBI is forced to undertake comprehensive
responsibility in this area as well.
Let us recall that in early April Mueller appointed
newly minted FBI cyber unit Larry Mefford. It is characteristic that

Carnivore's work upsets the FBI
Information center on the security of personal information in
Internet (Electronic Privacy Information Center) reported thata long-running FBI anti-terrorism investigation, perhaps even
concerning Osama Bin Laden, was under threat due to technology
ethical problems in the notorious Internet monitoring system
Carnivore. According to EPIC, according to the court order, the Center was
provided some FBI documentation regarding the incident,
happened in March 2000. Then, as is clear from the obtained EPIC
documents, FBI agents discovered that Carnivore was intercepting messages
not only those persons whose surveillance was authorized by the court, but also many
people completely uninvolved in the investigation. In an internal note
The FBI said that when this was discovered, "FBI technician
apparently so upset that he liquidated all the intercepted
messages, including those belonging to the suspects."
The surveillance was conducted by the FBI's International Terrorism Unit, and
specifically, its division "OBL" (specially formed for
investigation into the activities of Osama Bin Laden). Documents clearly
demonstrate deep dissatisfaction with the FBI system
Carnivore, especially with his passion to “grab” everything, thus violating
legislation on the privacy of personal information.
EPIC triumphs: they have been fighting Carnivore since the very momentwhen information about the system became public. Mined by
documents to the court, according to representatives of the Center, convincingly
prove that Carnivore, although powerful, is not well thought out
system. In fact, an independent examination carried out
The US Department of Justice showed the same thing. The FBI was recommended
make technological changes to Carnivore, but neither the Ministry of Justice nor the Bureau
it was never announced whether any upgrades to the system were carried out.
So now EPIC is insisting that Carnivore's work be
terminated until all circumstances are clarified.
All FBI documentation obtained by EPIC is available here.
