Intel has redesigned a key element of the design of the future version of the processor
Pentium 4 so that the chip can operate at higher speeds, but
analysts say the change is unlikely to significantly improve it at first
productivity.
The new Intel Pentium 4 Prescott processor, which will be equipped with a pipeline,
significantly longer than the 20-stage pipeline of modern Pentium 4,
due out early February. Some sources claim that it will contain
about 30 steps. It is likely that such an extension of the pipeline will help Intel
achieve its goal of releasing desktop chips clocked in 2004
4 GHz. (According to the same sources, Prescott will debut with a clock speed
approximately 3.4 GHz.)
An Intel representative would not confirm Prescott's pipeline length, but
said that it will indeed be longer than that of the Pentium 4: .
However, this change is likely to cause controversy: critics will say that Intel
is increasing the speed of its chips for show. When choosing a PC, consumers andmany enterprises usually pay attention to the speed of the processor,
measured in gigahertz. Typically, the higher it is, the higher the price.
In 2000, Intel, when moving from Pentium III to Pentium 4, increased the length
conveyor from 10 stages to 20. Despite the fact that the extended conveyor allows
increase performance, at first this additional speed, if anything, gives
