From Wladimir Bulchukey To All 7 February 2001

Greetings, All! === Cut === Mind ReSources 2001 Relocation to the party area (metro station Pervomaiskaya) was completed by me by 11.00 Moscow time on the 3rd February 2001. Sceners were seen in subway cars and around the entrance to the subway. Some were waiting for their group to arrive, others then I started looking for a way to the party-place. It turned out to be easy: passers-by willingly indicated the direction to the street we needed, and it was quite easy to follow: in that area the streets are wide and intersect exclusively at right angles. Required building looked like a strong House of Pioneers - now they are usually called Houses of Creativity; gaming club "Shaitan", where the party took place, occupies the 3rd floor of the building. Making sure you are on the lists registered (after all, I sent the application on the last day) and having paid 100 rubles (yes, the amount is not the smallest) for a ticket, vote-book and a pen to fill it out, I’m with the guys from the Central Processing Center (Center hardcore design, newly formed music/art group), met on the way, went into the club. In the club there were: wardrobe; 2 halls: chillout for non-competition viewing and compo for, as it is not trivial, carrying out compos; a separate room with 12 quite powerful computers (of course, after all, they usually play the most demanding games!),networked - for real-time compos; smoking place; bar; and - for those who have had too much beer - a restroom. People were waiting for the start of the competitions in the chillout hall, talking to each other friend or while watching on the widescreen Shad TV 2, Heaven 7, VIP2, and others from the assortment "everyone says that this is cool,” occasionally accompanying these creations with uploads. In addition, similar demos and intros from the Amiga were shown on TV. According to intelligence information, this was provided by a video player that played a cassette with a video recording of the Amiga's creations. Meanwhile I visited the party hall (the passage there was blocked by the club's security, so that I had to patch it with a shotgun... I'm just kidding, I'm just saying guards, why do I need organizers) and gave the flop with my work. The organizers/preselectors accepted it normally, although We first heard about it only at the party itself. Coming soon to the stage showroom floor Spine stood up and said: "In 5 minutes an mp3 competition without vocals will begin." The people did not object and slowly pulled into the compo hall. It must be said that both halls were identical in area and not particularly large: ~ 200-300 m2. But party visitors, given their number - according to various estimates, from 150 to 250 animals were present at the same time (in terms of quantity and this did not have a negative impact on the quality of the entries) - it was wherefrolic. There the organizers greeted us with the words “Wo- First of all, thank you to all of you who came to the party. The point is that Just yesterday we didn’t know whether it would take place.” The point is that you are evil The tax police began to raid the Shaitan club. Fortunately, This didn’t affect us, and the club seemed to get off with a slight scare (in any case, I wish “Shaitan” well). Then it was added: "Let's party!", after which the first one began compo. In the “mp3 without vocals” category there were, naturally, many similar at each other trance things. 75% percent: this is Gabber beat, simple piano phrase and trance synths (although some - especially the one who came in 1st number - could boast also competent information). There were attempts to make a dream house, industrial. The most interesting things started on number 10 and ended on the 15th. And in total, by the way, there were compositions 18. The one that was 10th (AFAIK) I called “Chemical Brothers meets” "Beastie Boys" Hip-hop rhythm, sometimes speeding up to breakbeat, high-quality synthesizers and, it seems, guitar part - "everything you need for a better break." So Naturally, by the middle of the track I couldn’t stand it and started make tricks in your favorite “robot” aka “pharaoh” style. Later it turned out that this music was written by MIC and is called"Lump Bizguid" and took 1st place. Then two were lost beautiful piano pieces (with strong rock accompaniment). One of them - "The night is long..." from Madminder - got 2nd place. The third was shared by "A trip to nowhere" by Themes (I hope I didn't misinterpret the nickname?) and "Ambient" by Svenboat. After the 18th track was played and the organizers were convinced of In the absence of the 19th, listeners were asked to submit vote-lists. Yes, yes, that's right. The fact is that the voting system was not khukhra-mukhry: visitors were given a notepad along with the ticket, on on each sheet of which the phrase “Rating from 1 to 5” was written, a plate with job numbers from 1 to 45 (don’t be so scared! In no single compo the number of works exceeded 25) and cells for scores, as well as the name of the competition - for example, "ANSI graphics" or "Megademo". Also in the vote-book there were about 5 sheets without indicating nominations - in case they change. After the next compo sheet was torn out and sent to the trash bin for voting. It was then announced that we should now take a break. The break was quite long - about 30 minutes. Organizers We set out to immediately count all the votes for the first component. And, The funny thing is, they thought. The results were announced, but the disclosure We decided to leave the names of the winners of the next competitions for dessert- that is, for the final of the 2nd day. The 128 bytes intro compo also happened on the first day of the party. There was a lot to be happy about here. Number of works - about 6, quality is at a decent level. Looked, voted, left for a break. In general, these breaks of 20, 25, 35 minutes were... yes no, they weren’t, but they beat me. They hit us, stagers, that is, nerves. It was frustrating. What did you think? I was beginning to fear that There won’t be enough time for all the competitions if things continue like this. More strained Neoris - these guys who used to write music for intros Proxium, were in charge of the sound and at every break they stuck their teeth-crushing trans. No, of course you can use this music listen, but not in the same quantity and not to the same extent volume?! Moreover, iceDragon//hbg budded with Neoris I kept trying to make the sound louder - to make him dance, you know I guess... To immeasurable happiness, on the 2nd day there are breaks were smaller and even Neoris listened and played the music calm down. As a result, absolutely all components that were work was carried out successfully, and during breaks it was possible communicate with people, discuss work, organize joint projects, ect. About 512 bytes intro compo you can repeat everything that written above about 126 b. Works (also something like 6) corresponded to their size, mostly they were more or lessdecent entries. After another gathering of voits and another break (at During this brake, everyone managed to refuel with food and drink in the cafeteria, and I also got to chat with Bro//hbg, FatCrazer//StormStudios, iron_Lung`om//Galza and others) to us showed photobased gfx. Well, what can I say? No special masterpieces was; someone took one photo and distorted it with the same filter. But It was still interesting to watch. What is this muthafunkin Conformity has gone out of me - I see art everywhere?.. First number was a funny picture like this (it seemed to be later in the finale is out) - it’s just a copy of the cover of the last album Marilyn Manson. :-) At Flash presentation compo only one work was submitted, but what a fun time! Cartoon about a penguin with a funny tune, yes also with stylish graphics (it seemed to me that Penguin himself was sprite-based, as opposed to vector landscapes) - this is how they like it talk throbs, evil. Naturally, they watched the flash movie without voting. In other words, out of competition. J-Spine also threatened to throw everyone into a stupor with 4k intrams, and I didn't deceive you! 4k intro compo was originally planned for the 2nd day, but after consulting with the people, the main organizer decided feed them to the audience on Saturday. This is where the real rules began. I don’t remember all the works, but there were a lot of good ones. All I can say for sure about the mini-intro results compos, is that in all 3 nominations one and the same person. It was fun to watch Madminder or Windy in 3rd time they said: “First place in 4 cab intro - yes, again he..." Well done guy - at the same time he got himself a six-month stipuku. According to hrgforce.org, his nickname is Pyrodex. Well, at the end of the first day we were pleased with an mp3 with vocals. Already I remember these things well - fortunately, there were only 7 of them (by the way, during this compo all sorts of things were shown on the screen humorous pictures downloaded from the Internet, but for the rest of the time music compo gave up on this). #1 A very strong Fear Factory style track. Presumably 3rd place. #2 AFAIK something dance-trance. #3 Eh, I shouldn’t have said that I remembered all the tracks... It seems that- it's danceable. Or maybe a guitar. #4 Yeah, don't say "hop" until you say "hip"... It seems something guitar. Or maybe dance. #5 We waited. Track from Phantom Lord - his style is impossible not to know. Sounds better than his previous works, the ending is significantly different from the outset and the middle. I liked it, but people put him in 2nd place - apparently, I’m tired of giving him everything prizes. 2nd place. #6 DJ Psych//Psycho - “I want to get drunk.” 1st place. #7 FatCrazer - "Sausage".Do you think that's all? Right now. We still have real-time gfx to draw made it in time. It went like this: volunteer suicide bombers signed up for number of participants, then all 10th (or 12th) (that’s how many there were enough of us) they sat us at the computers in a separate room for 1.5 hours and They said, “We’re drawing a piece on the theme of “New Year.” The software on the machines was for every taste: 3D Studio MAX R3, Lightwave 3D last rel., Maya, Photoshop 6.0, Corel Draw! 9 or 10, Corel Xara, Corel Photo- Painter, and, of course, Paint(brush) and Notepad - for ASCII :-) (why are you laughing? I was chatting at a party with one guy, who put up a killer picture in hand-drawn gfx - he’s at full seriously said that it pixelates (namely pixelates) only in Photoshop and Paint, however, they recently showed him GFX2 by X- man...). I myself only used 3DSmax and Photoshop, I can talk about them say that they spoke Russian and ran quickly. After 1.5 hours works in the form in which they were at that time, on a grid transferred the organizers to the server, showed them on the screen (by the way, I didn't talk about screen sizes? Approximately 3x4 meters, normal the setting, given the size of the room, was visible to everyone) and spectators (it’s nice that almost everyone waited until the end of the compo) appreciated. As it became known the next day, 2nd place 3 people took the place at once: Shark//hbg, iceDragon and Netrat. 1st -at Sprocket//hrg. Spro's creation could also be done in home-made gfx (perhaps in vector gfx) set compo - it’s so good was done. However, his technique requires a minimum of time, and many were unable to make out what he depicted even with half liter The first day I heard a version of "He drew a vagina." (on the question “What does New Year have to do with it?” was reasonably answered, “Why Still studying for the New Year?"); in the second - much more plausible "He drew a Christmas tree." Well, side opera can really pass for a Christmas tree... On voting on real-time gfx compo J-Spine said: "Thank you to all visitors. There will be no more competitions today, they will continue tomorrow. Those wishing to stay at the disco, that is afterparty or spend the night at the club - you are welcome. But if If you leave "Shaitan" - be back before 10 o'clock, because in 10 the club is closing." On the watch (On the Fatcruiser watch or something else) someone's - I don't wear a watch) it was 21.oo. I watched for another 20 minutes Amiga demos in a chill-out, hung out with the people and went home. On Sunday... However, we still had to live until Sunday. Saturday night on Sunday (as well as from Friday to Saturday) I spent Without sleeping even a minute, I tried to write a music module. Yeah, right now... Around 9 am I got up from the computer, had breakfast andwent to the 2nd day of the party. Having difficulty breaking through snowstorms that captured mail in the Izmailovo region, telegraph, telephone and, most importantly, the streets, I ended up in a club. There's a lot of people there There weren't many (mostly Stormers), everyone was sitting in the compo hall. About an hour later, others who were present at the 1st also arrived. day: people from Throb, Neonray, some from T-Rex (most notably Noob Saibot) and HRG, many, many others. At 12 o'clock they started playing works from the category alternative tracker music (64 channels). I don't remember much here. Overall the compo was very reminiscent of an mp3 no vocals. More piano, less samples, stronger It smells like a tracker - that's all the differences. However, there were glimpses here. Then it was the turn of the graphics components. Vector gfx - ~ 7 works, Render gfx - ~ 10 works, Pixel - 23 works. Windy spoke back in 1st day (February 3), that I brought a friend to the party who drew a useful vector picture, high-quality to the point of being indistinguishable from pixel. Well, from the pixelated picture on the screen indeed it was not easy to distinguish, but from other people’s brutal - easily. ;-) If this kitten on the windowsill is modified - the work would go to 1st place. But this time I got the upper hand Yoyoshk's many years of experience, Natash's took 3rd place (by the way, it seems that she turned out to be the only representativeof the fair sex, who received an MRS diploma). About other works from vtr, rnd and pxl I won’t say anything - look for yourself. Personally I was most pleased with pixeled gfx compo: great number of works their high (in general) level (according to Hell'Cyber'Cannibal, who was sitting in the preselection, he had to kill just one job, and that one - because of her supposed render origin). But no one I didn’t bring it. Somewhere in the middle of the graphic components the main thing happened music event: 4-channel MOD music compo. Yes, exactly the main thing is musical. Write a good module in 4 channels under strength only to a truly elite tracker - they are the ones were exhibited. By the way, during this compo Tangerine - 3 arrived February he celebrated a family holiday and was unable to attend the 1st day, - chatted with XPEh and plunged into the “party spirit”. :-) I was pleased with the fifth issue of jazz and a couple more tracks. But when sampled guitar chords burst into the latest MOD, the outcome of the compo was decided. Tangerin honestly admitted that it was his mod, and he wrote it in the summer on his Amiga in the intervals between swimming and gardening. People live... :-) There were no rules at all in the 64k intro: there were surprises, but not openings. The first issue was the intro in the Spectrum style.iceDragon, FatCraser (his verdict - "not bad, but behind by 10 years"), and on other occasions they made fun of the authors’ attempts to leave on the effects of “10 years ago”, although there was even a couple of prerendered elements. In general, intra not only lagged behind, but also failed - 3rd place. Number 2 is the only serious one work. Authors - Sunman (code) & Manwe (music). Intra effects, to tell the truth, it was not overloaded - probably the lion's share 64 kilobytes ate by chip tune Manwe: its very soft and clean the sound (Manwe doesn’t do anything crooked in principle) clearly said that samples are unlikely to be rendered, and if they are rendered, then the harmonics are there are more of them than hand-drawn compo entries. Before the demonstration 3rd, last (yeah, I’m telling you - no compo) intro, Spine warned: "The intro, which will now be shown, is written 14 year old man, this is his first job, so don't judge strictly." A rectangular semblance of a rock appeared on the screen, there is a man standing on it, and under the mountain there is a house with an M$ flag. All this from Pascal lines. The little man groped towards the cliff, shied away from not him and the HQ BG exploded (kamikaze, you have to understand), after which Spine added, “That’s it,” causing an incredible reaction from the audience. I I thought the guy who had already exposed this case was a kamikaze - Here in Europe, at the age of 14, people code this... But he got 3rdplace and well deserved. Let's hope that in 5 years he will become win prizes at Assembly (of course, not for nothing, but for already really adult code). Trad. music compo pleased me much more than the alternatives. There were semi-symphonic pieces, there were piano pieces, there was even great classic funk in the style of the late Sly Stone. Well and again Phantom Lord from Accept Corp. (I expected to hear it in Alternatively, by the way, Phantom again grabbed 2nd place). Although he probably just sampled the riffs again and didn't no stereo (and in his grungy style this is necessary, and In general, you can’t play on stereo in the tracker). It’s not clear which sideways into traditional music a hardcore track (and a couple more) something dream-like). As soon as it ended, Tangerine remarked: “If this is traditional, then I am a Japanese refrigerator!” Textmode art compo (ASCII and ANSI compo were combined) passed after Megademo, but I’ll still save the most interesting for then... There were ~ 5-6 works in ASCII/ANSI. 1st place - Crasher. He It seems ANSI doesn't draw. Therefore, 2nd - ANSI in style photo collage with a yellow female silhouette. There was also a real-time coding compo. Ramzai//T-Rex and Upi//Throb was written for Windows, Sunman - for DOS, and Arvi, the organizer of Jump is generally in text-mode. Real-time music compodid not carry out - Impulse and Fast Trackers did not work at the club zvukuhuh. However, after participation in this compo Tangerine//T-rex signed up (and then Amrorb//T-Rex), his the event has lost all meaning. As for the mega demos, there were 5 of them: #1 from abroad (drive, video inserts, crazy (or glitchy) colors and “quasi- hardcore" in the soundtrack - 3rd place), #2 from NeonRay (stylish and story OpenGL work - 2nd place), #3 from Accet Corp (again solo Phantom Lord, but - "designer" video mode, more progressive 3D models, and completely uncharacteristic for him music - could compete with #1 for 3rd place), #4 - from Throb (this must be seen - humor never gets in the way - 1st place. By the way, Upi admitted that the music for the final part was ripped off by the group NoFX (these are such punks) - this is something that hurts Offspring resembled), #5 - junk from 1997 from Sigma Group. After completing all components, the organizers asked for a break for 20 minutes. After 30-40 minutes / ;-) / the announcement began winners and presentation of prizes. Everything went smoothly here, which is completely not typical for our parties. A few words about the prizes: for 3rd place awarded a diploma, for the 2nd diploma and a certificate for web hosting from from Madminder, for the first place - a diploma and a sum of money. What's up amount, then for megademo it was 1000 rubles, in allin other nominations - 500 rubles. (but nothing stops you get prizes in several categories, right? Many they did so.) In addition, the group that collected the most prizes in the team competition (it turned out to be Throb) was awarded - I quote organizers - "a very large sum - 500 dollars." Wow. By the way, at the end the head of the magazine ][akep and asked the stagers: "Guys, let's spend the New Year under with the slogan “Stop fighting.” After that, he handed over the special. prizes Sunman for 64k intro, Upi//throb for megademo, Night_ for another something and T-Rex in the person of their leader Noob as the most popular group. Once again adding: “There’s no need to fight,” the main Xakep of all Russi left. By the way, the special prizes were gift boxes with licensed games (Noob got Diablo II, Knight - "Gothic of Mars") and T-shirts "Xakepa" (the winners are still not can decide what to do with them - not wear them). How apt Knight noted: "They gave me a licensed game - the first one in my life... By the way, check it out: Hacker magazine is giving away licensed games!" In general, I liked it, and not only me - I think everyone. Once again, many thanks to the organizers! MRS 2001 UNOFFICIAL Results appeared on www.hrgforce.org.
