Greetings, All! === Cut === REPORT Cooler/Psycho 5.02.2001 Instead of a preface And instead of a preface, I want to say that in this report my subjective opinion is stated. Honestly, I would I’m just too lazy to write a traditional report (I didn’t even bother with the design do, but just cut out the picture from my badge ;-), so I I decided to just write about what I liked and what I didn’t. It’s somehow quiet on the Internet... how as if nothing happened :-( General impressions The general impression can be expressed in two words, unfortunately contradictory: rules and sucks. That is, something was cool, but something quite the opposite. But in the end (especially after awards :-) everything has settled down and we can sum up some results. Which is what I'm going to do. In general, it will be cooler at Millennium, so come to Minsk on May 5-6! How did we get hereIt's hard to say... I actually didn't plan to go to MRS, but the day before the party started in the morning DJ Psych called me and after Ten minutes later I already knew that I was going to Moscow. It's a pity that everything It happened so spontaneously, it would have been possible to code something. A In general, it’s not good to hold a demo party immediately after the session. In general, we bought tickets, agreed with weIrd about the place meeting and hit the road. Upon arrival we wanted to meet Twinzen and Virtual Brothers, but, unfortunately, neither one nor the other It didn’t work out and we decided to move to partyplace. Partyplace Finding the treasured door turned out to be easy. We climbed third floor and discovered that we were the first visitors. Us They explained that they would soon be selling tickets and letting people inside. And so it happened: tickets were sold to those who registered in advance 100 ros. rubles, and the rest - 150 rubles. However, in reality in fact, we were also given voting cards made in the form of notebooks with detachable sheets (one per component), and handles. True The pens didn’t always write, but they still ruled! After some time, FatCrazer and other guys from Cooler magazine (thank you for promoting my nickname :-) FatCrazer tried to use its voice recorder, but the mood was too cheerful and nothing meaningful this idea didn't work out...A typical computer club setting... The party took place in Moscow at the gaming club "Shaitan", from where They prudently took out the computers. In short, what is there to explain - look at the photo: bars, surveillance cameras, Russian flag typical gaming club ;-) Okay, in fact the premises were quite good: two large rooms, a cafe. It just happened inappropriate... In one room they played demos (PC and Amiga), pre-recorded on video, here people could calmly hang out (i.e. sleep). In another room, compos were carried out. When I went there, I was very surprised: the room was empty, then there was nothing suitable for sitting there (except window sills, already occupied by that time). True later they brought benches and chairs from another room, but that was enough at most for 30-40 people. Speaking of visitors... The people, that is, the visitors There weren't many people there; too many people simply couldn't fit in there :-) As a result, as soon as something interesting started, the room 70-80 people were packed. However, according to the organizers, the party had about two hundred visitors (on the first day), which is quite consistent with data on pre-order tickets. By the way, this is very plausible, because... there was a clear rotation of people: some left, others came. This is natural, because wasit was announced that the party will take place non-stop until the awards, and at night there will be something like a disco “Where it’s boring no one will, I guarantee you that" Spine Speaking of organizers... Organizers Apparently, the main organizers of MRS were Madminder and Spine. And although other personalities also appeared, the main part the work seemed to be done by these two. I was amazed at HOW they they worked: calmly, confidently, without unnecessary emotions. But to be being an organizer of a demo party is a kind of stress. In short these the guys did everything fine and there is nothing more to write here. Let's talk better about the organization of the festival itself... Organization The pre-work done is impressive. This is almost continuous demonstration of the best Amiga and PC demos on huge TV, and voting pads, and sheets of corridor, where those interested could leave autographs and other nonsense (and there were a lot of people willing, so see for yourself, in what these sheets turned into!), and many other "little things" that are not immediately noticeable, but about which organizers of other democratic parties often forgot. Level of work The most different. Since the preselection was purely symbolic (however, for some reason weIrd’s work in hand-drawn was killed), then showed everything that happened. And there was all sorts of things... So in musicalcompetitions, the level of work was quite high. In graphics and intro I didn’t notice any special masterpieces (except for work No. 0 - Dos Navigator), although some of the intros were pretty cool, like Worm. Not I know what they did to him (Dos Navigator), but he spat frame window with exception and then the organizers worked exclusively on the command line. I remember Spine was fiddling around for a long time with the settings so that the sound starts working in the next intro, and it asked: “People, are you interested in looking at this at all?” (in meaning on the setup process). To which the people responded in unison: "Yesss!" In general, the impression was that people were in a hurry and the work was often unfinished. The organizers, it seems, too We were in a hurry, so 2 intros didn’t start the first time were able to. Often there was a feeling that there was not enough work mixed up. So in hand-drawn gfx there were works very similar to render. A couple of tracks from alternative music jumped into traditional. But these glitches occurred due to the fact that the work were accepted at the party itself, and at the last moment by the organizers (after all, by and large there were only two of them!) were simply not in able to track the compliance of works with nominations. Pinned the work in 64K intro of the youngest participant of the party, who looked to be about 13 years old. It was something with sound onspeaker and a man flying in a parabola (with a sad ending). Technique The technology seemed to be quite good: modern (and quite miniature) the projector reproduced colors well, and if it had more keystone configure... Computers did not slow down, dimensions TV (on which they played pre-recorded video the demos) are impressive, the 4 speakers of the S90 also seem to be great. Truth 2 of them (bass) were cut off several times for 5-7 seconds, because the amplifier was overloaded, but the overall impression of the sound quality is didn't spoil it. It also turned out that Fast Tracker on Vortex is not works, so realtime music compo did not take place. Well ok, because it was actually not planned :))) By the way, about competitions... Competitions Confirmation that "Ash was here" There were many of them, and all were PC. So it was quite strange see spektrumists, and not local ones, like EA/Antares, but a few others, like Ash's Demiurge. However, this is good... The schedule of competitions was posted in the corridor, but it was of no use there was no such thing, because they still walked at random, mixed up and even the composition of the competitions did not correspond in advance declared (for example, MP3 was divided into “with vocals” and “without vocals", announced a bunch of real-time components, of which all nothing happened except the code). In general, find out what competitionwill be next, it was often possible only a couple of minutes before it started. Large and unpredictable breaks between competitions too weren't very happy. To be fair, I note that in during breaks they played the soundtracks of the best Russian commands." Well, I don’t know... everyone has different tastes, but for me it’s better would have turned on something like a tracker like victory.xm :-) But even this better than nothing. Determination of the winners 1st place in the competition "MP3 with vocals" Using separate sheets for each component allowed quickly calculate voting results. After each compo people threw sheets of paper into the trash can (it looked like regular trash bucket). On the first day, the results of the first few components were announced a few hours later, then the organizers began to is to score. Maybe this is for the better... At the end of the second day, the results of all competitions were announced and the winners were awarded. For first place they gave cash prize 500 rub. (and in megademo - 1000 rubles), which imho is very not bad (the very fact that they gave cash prizes is already deserves attention). Moreover, at the end of the Throb group, like The winner of the most prizes was given a prize of $500! Now Upi sits there puzzled, afraid to touch these prizes :-) Perhaps The prize fund is a very strong point of the MRS party. Likely,Sponsors played a big role here, i.e. club Shaitan (general sponsor), "Hacker" magazine and others. Photos The report is coming to an end, but I still have some good ones left unused photos. Don't let the goodness go to waste! So look... Conclusion So, the party is over. It seems good, but it could have been better. However, for the first time it’s not bad at all...
