Greetings, All
Here's what I wrote almost a year ago about the rap festival for
forum WWW.WEC.RU (now slightly corrected):
One day our sound engineer Vadimych - he’s also a sound engineer
Regional House of Arts Workers (ODRI) - asked me to replace him
at the controls during one of the concerts. I agreed, although I found out
that this concert will be a rap festival. "Well, rap is rap - that's it
I’ll find out better what this genre is. After all, it’s also a form of art.” - I thought
me. Apparently the director thought the same thing when providing the premises for the festival.
AUDREY Yuri Tumarkin is an elderly man, but convinced that informals
art needs help...
Arriving after work at AUDR, I already met the festival organizers there. The oldest looked about 23-25 years old, the rest looked significantly
younger - teenagers... I was told that I would need a remote control with an amplifier and
three microphones. There was already a vinyl turntable and a DJ console on the table.
and CD player. When I connected the amplification system, the "DJ" guy
showed how he makes “scratch” - he turns the record back and forth with his hand and
mixes this sound into the main soundtrack. From those suggested by me
they refused microphone stands, saying that a real rapper holds
the microphone is in your hands, and the stand only hinders your movements...
Everything would be fine, but the condition of the brought equipment left much to be desired
the best thing is that something was constantly being cut off in the DJ console, and the cords for
I had to solder the CD player connections...
The participants approached, and I began to watch how, 15 minutes before the start, they
began to decide who was supporting whom. Moreover, the organizers clearly did not know
even the titles and names of all the performers. One of the guys who came up made
with surprised eyes he said: “And we have a phonogram on a cassette...”. However, the solution
They proposed the problem themselves - a battery-powered pocket cassette player.
The quality, as you can imagine, was appalling. Naturally, not about any
There was no talk at sound checks and rehearsals - time was running out...
The hall gradually filled with the public. The chairs were removed so that people
could dance. The audience was dressed both stylishly and sloppily(however, in rap, sloppiness is precisely the style) - huge pants
with many patch pockets, “shit-smashing” boots, T-shirts for release
with “acid” patterns, rag jackets with the same hoods.
Some of the girls came in "tops", showing parts of their bodies decorated
tattoos and piercings. Some of them had their hair dyed in some
wild colors, and hairstyles could be called “lyrical disorder”...
And one more important detail - many already had a fairly glazed
gaze and impaired coordination of movements. Almost everything was held in their hands
some bottle or can of soft or low-alcohol
drink (“screwdriver”, “hooch”, “gin and tonic”, etc. - just not beer
- style however!).
The festival has begun. The soundtracks were played, and the rappers came out to
stage to read your rhyming speeches. I won't talk about music -
in my opinion, hip-hop is monotonous and monotonous, although the rhythm is still
something “catches”... I’ll say about the quality and level of the performers.
It always seemed to me that a rapper should have, first of all, good
diction and ability to work with a microphone. But none of the ten participants
did not demonstrate these skills. Moreover, it seemed that some
of the performers are seeing a microphone for the first time in their lives. In addition, a couple
festival participants were unable to enter in the right place the first time
phonogram, and had to start it from the beginning. It was very difficult for me as a sound engineer. First of all, I
tired of turning the tone control knobs to correct the frequency characteristics
phonograms. Some had strong bass protrusion, others had no bass at all,
for others, the general level did not reach... Secondly, I was tormented with
microphones - I had to periodically run up to the table on which
folded the microphones after the performance and turned them off so as not to whistle.
Once I had to urgently replace the cord, which someone had failed to
occurred during the performance. How many times have rappers approached me?
with the words “The microphone doesn’t work...”, to which I replied: “And you
turned on?"...
The disgusting diction of the performers did not allow one to understand the main thing -
rap lyrics. Although in some places it was clear how low the level
this "poetry". Primitive rhymes, plenty of slang and obscenity. Topics
- girls who break off, "cops-goats" and "bulls-gopniks" who offend
unfortunate rappers, adults forcing them to study and preventing them from getting high...
Participants in the rap festival were enthusiastically received by the public, and the
listeners reacted especially violently to expressions. Overall Holiday
Disobedience loomed in all its glory.
When all this was over and the audience left the hall, I looked around the room.
Empty plastic bottles and cans lay everywhere. In the corner I founda couple of syringes, and in the smoking room the smell of tobacco was mixed with another characteristic
aroma... I deliberately did not allow this whole household to be cleaned up before the director arrived
AUDREY. Tumarkin, seeing such a picture, only scratched the back of his head... and henceforth began
be more critical of the provision of club premises.
What conclusions did I draw about our “rappers”? These are the dumbest and laziest of all
all "musical" informals. At least the punks try to play the guitar and
sing, clubbers can dance well. I'm not talking about spiritually
advanced neo-hippies or an intellectually advanced computer crowd...
But if you don’t have an ear for music, you’re too lazy to read smart books, computer
used exclusively for games, and good music and poetry "load" -
a young man is into rap. It's both simple and quite "informal"...
Best wishes Oleg Dunaev

Hello All!
Some may disagree, but the last paragraph pretty much sums it up
impression of most rappers
Good luck.

Well, rap is generally a shitty and disgusting phenomenon, because he pisses me off!
And all Russian rappers - for me it’s just a game of blacks...
