I remembered here the bookmaker with its “double” screen (the video mode of which essentially depends
That’s why we display it on a black and white or color display) and I thought of the following simple
solution.
What if we implement a b/w mode? What if we have a certain port, with
record "1" which includes remixing of color signals, and we
do we get b/w video even on a color monitor?
Pros:
1. Possible implementation in the form of an adapter that connects between the video output
spec and monitor (based on the Graffiti principle on the Amiga). Well, of course, not counting
need to connect to the system bus. But still missing
intervention in the existing VC.
2. The amount of video memory does not increase and working with it does not become more complicated or
slows down.
On such a screen, IMHO, you can play quite decent b/w without any problems
video in 16 shades of gray. Precisely at 16, using attributes. Encode video
it is possible according to the MPEG principle - by selecting macroblocks of size 8x8, inside which
the attribute represents the darkest and lightest color, the rest is dither.
This is much better than the two colors available in our usual toys.
A more complicated version of the system - the ability to display only part of the screen in black and white
form, but this will require intervention in the existing VC.

The video output of the spec already has a full B/W video signal output, which can be
connect to either a B/W TV, a color TV, or a PC TV tuner.

The back is not useful at all, there are two bits per pixel.

Another bad idea ;) - but the palette is also implemented with overdrive... 8
colors at least, and if you also pull out Bright separately, then all 16.
