Hello, Irimi
What kind of drive do you have? Most likely the jumpers there need to be pulled! you have it
how 1.2Mb is displayed! but it needs to be 720/360

Hello, All
I apologize if this has already been posted on the forum, but I couldn’t find it with a search.
I'm trying to revive my Spectrum 48k with the Beta disk interface controller, and
I'm faced with the fact that a 5.25 drive formats a floppy disk in about two hours, no less.
At first I decided that this was a problem with the controller, or an error in the wiring of the cable,
but then I gained patience, waited for the formatting to finish, and... it turned out
that the system works: you can write and read a file, but only very slowly.
Next, I connected the 3.5 drive. The effect is the same, although I quickly realized that
I need 740kb floppy disks, I sealed the window, and everything went fine.
What about the 5.25 drive? I believe that the point is precisely that he does not
correctly recognizes the floppy disk format, but I don’t know how to fix it.
Thank you :)

Hello, breeze
Drive "YE-DATA". Model YD-380B. I tried changing the jumpers...not yet
helped.
There is also an Epson SD-700. Same story.

Hello, Irimi
you do this. connect two flops.
from one you load ADS v2.xx (advanced disk service)
you select another flop, and in the program the SPIN option (sort of) - it starts for you
constantly show current speed - for 1.2flops the speed is usually 360
rpm poke all the jumpers (you can try the 2nd conductor of the loop to ground
throw) until it reaches 300 rpm.
I've converted quite a few disk drives this way

I have an Epson SD600 on my Spectrum.
Here I copied the jumpers, see if they fit.
PS. I made a mistake in the file with the model name - jumpers from SD600!!!!!!

Hello Mick
If there is a question about switching a 1.2 Mb drive to 720K mode, you can simply
issue the CAT command if there is no floppy disk in the drive, and then at random
rearrange jumpers on the drive. The spindle will rotate at one
the beautiful moment will begin to rotate more slowly. So you have found the jumper,
switching to 720K :) .

Hello, Wlodek
Mona is even simpler - out of 5 wires going to the servomotor board we find +5, +12,
gnd (continuity to the power connector) - so as not to short-circuit with each other. Remaining
two - motor and speed (300/360) - simply at random (by issuing the same CAT command to
for example) we poke into the ground - usually one of them turns on 300 rps. if not
It helped, we also poked at +5V. usually this signal and ground are near the edge
of these five pieces (i.e. we just bridge them with tin snot and that’s it).

Hello, Irimi
slowdown during formatting - errors.
if there are a lot of them, the guru meditates :) for two hours as described.
option two
- bad disks
- HD discs are formatted on a DD drive (or on an HD drive that is successfully
completely switched to DD mode :) ) - because HD requires large recording currents.
That's why.
if you switch not with a jumper, but only with a servomotor (in this case, the signal
speed, grounded on the motor board - should be torn off from the main board) -
it is likely that the write current will remain the same (large) and you can try
format HD disks.
A radical solution is to use DD density disks.

Hello Ronin
Yes, indeed, I found the necessary jumper on the YE-DATA drive, and the revolutions
fell. A simpler method with shorting the probe to ground also works,
going to the servomotor. True, the formatting process itself did not go faster
:(
With EPSON it was not even possible to reduce the speed. Of all the available jumpers, none
one did not affect them, but to get to the motor conductors.. it takes all
unscrew the drive, because it is made very compactly, and the engine is right on
board... of course, it is the latest in the assembly (disassembly) scheme :)
But anyway, thanks again for your help, I’ll think further.
By the way, from the symptoms: formatting to 3.5 seems to be working fine, but somewhere
Starting from cylinder 60, the drive also begins to slow down. The effect is the same
appears on different drives and does not depend on the floppy disk. What is this, a glitch or
normal?

Hello Ronin
Indeed, he writes with errors. At the end of formatting it gives 2535/2544. Moreover
with different 3.5 drives and with different floppy disks. For some reason it starts to shut up
on cylinder 44. Maybe check the wiring of the cable or is it more likely a problem with the controller?
I left 5.25 alone for now.
