Connect modem via SMUC

Hello everyone! The subject got stuck. I supplied +12V where needed (the modem does not use -5 and -12), on the modem set COM1. I turn on the computer. When starting, I see the inscription modem found. I'm launching Melon 1.80+. I set SMUC COM1 in it and exit the settings. I get hanging Melon... I tried two different modems. In both cases the result is the same... Where to dig? How to check that the modem is connected normally? Stanislav
