Hello, All!
Preamble: I have a 4.5V 0.6A power supply designed for a ~120V 60Hz network.
Made in China, from a player or phone - I don’t remember, network

secondary winding with a midpoint, i.e. this is "full wave single phase"

I needed to turn it on at 220V. I took a high voltage diode IN5406 (600V
3A), soldered it in series with the primary winding in order to cut off half
sinusoids and thus get a trance input, albeit a little clumsy, but
110V. I plug this product into the socket, examine it, and smell it. Everything seems OK. I'm reaching out
behind the voltmeter and suddenly I hear hissing and a small “bang”...
The wiring to the trans burned out, the diode (600-volt!) broke through.
What did I do wrong?
I have a similar power supply, but at 9V...

Valera, is this some kind of joke? :)
If it's not a joke, then:
using a diode you created a constant component of the input voltage
and applied it to the primary winding; in other words, turned on the transformer
into the DC network the voltage is, however, about 156 volts :) .
A diode rated for 3A burned out - according to the current (assuming 10A).
We calculate the power applied to the transformer winding: about 1.5 kW.
The winding also burned out.

Have you ever wondered why they don’t use a diode in switches 220-110? ;)

Think about how a trance differs from a simple piece of wire... And why if the wire
unwind from the trance - then he will make a short circuit...

He also needs the other half.

Tear off the secondary winding from the stabilizer, measure what happens there, and
modify the stabilizer accordingly...
